The APICS certifications can be useful. I see many jobs posted where one is a requirement or a preferred qualification. APICS claims that those with certifications earn 27% more than those without. I wouldn’t totally discount their value. Even if you have a solid grasp of many concepts, a certification is an indicator to employers that you DO have a solid understanding of a concept and that you’ve put in the work/time to show that.
I think the help may be more perceived than real. You get a huge study book and then take an exam. It seems to be a lot of memorization. I’ve been particularly interested in the CPIM and think I’d learn a lot of terminology and concepts, but I don’t see how it would/could make measured changes for what I do for my organization.
I would suggest you look into Lean and Agile methodologies. The true challenge isn’t getting the certs, it’s applying them and gaining the buy-in. Master that and you’ll go pretty far.
Close to useless, don’t bother. SC people are hands on, not much focus on such credentials, get real experience instead
I can see your friend's logic - sometimes it takes a certification to stand out in the job market. However, I think it depends on the type of supply chain certificate he is pursuing and the industry he is looking to work in. Many industries value specific certifications, so I would suggest researching the ones that are most applicable to your friend's career goals.
Both of us are almost 20 years into our careers, and that’s what made me question his logic here. I have a Bachelor and knowledge of virtually any concept you can throw at me. I’m asking the question to ensure that I am not missing something, or I have just been luckily skimming by with the least amount of paper to back up my knowledge.
