Does anyone use an AI recorder in their practice? I want to try one for deposition and meeting summaries + note taking throughout the day. Any recommendations?

You should check with your firm before doing this. It could create privilege/confidentiality issues. It depends on the software and whether the information collected from you is stored and used.

I've used AI note takers for non privileged/low stakes things with the pernission of all involved. (It's easier to ask permission rather than find out where everyone on the call is located and research their state's laws regarding consent for recording.) things like... A meeting with a new swag company for new promotional material. A call with an organization that I was looking into partnering with for pro bono matters. A visit from a contractor who may be able to help us with some acoustics issues in our office.

But AI note takers may in fact destroy privilege depending on the jurisdiction. My clients sometimes have them auto join the meetings, and I always kick them out based on the varying case law on this issue. It's too uncertain and not worth the risk.

If I found out an associate was using AI note takers for privileged or confidential meetings, I'd be very upset. Even if our firm didn't have a policy on this kind of thing, which it does, it would show me that the associate focused more on convenience than client interests. Again, for low stakes things? No problem. Anything involving a client or a matter? Problem.

If your firm doesn't have a policy on this, you should still ask for an opinion from the firm regarding whether it is allowed to protect yourself before moving forward.

Genuine question out of curiosity: if these things use convos in their training data, does that destroy privilege? I assume that if a court finds that the use of the AI tool destroyed the confidentiality of a conversation, the data (including recordings and transcripts) is not protected and can be obtained via subpoena or discovery in litigation.

ah ok gotcha

GC at my firm says NEVER to use one and never to agree to let clients or OC use one on calls. Too much risk and not enough safeguards.

like

My firm just implemented a policy banning this. I think some courts are cracking down on this at least for clients

like

I would never let a colleague record me, even for an internal meeting. Depositions are different, but for meetings, creating a recording just introduces a discovery risk there’s no meaningful benefit to creating.

like

Got it. In my case the recordings aren’t being stored once they’re transcribed. I won’t be keeping a library of voice files, it’s strictly to save myself the time between waiting for a transcript to be able to recall what was said in a deposition and to “brain dump” periodically throughout the day. I do get your concerns if that were how this tech were being used

Recently, the CEO and my boss, the VP gave me the latitude to promote myself and "write my own" job description. I've been the Marketing Manager of this company for about 7 months. Already received 1 raise.

Much of the work in my "new" job description, I've already been doing. My currently salary is $70K. New title is Director of Communications and Systems Integration. What is a reasonable salary increase here.

I have about 7 years experience in this area.

Any advice on how to deal with a partner/boss who is shifting all responsibility to me with zero guidance, no mentoring, and an unwillingness to discuss the issues? (Small firm, only associate under this partner and have been working at the firm for 2 years). There are an increasing number of passive aggressive comments from the partner who expects to be completely hands off once the case lands on my desk. Wants me to figure it all out despite cases being from different areas of law.
