Does anyone work in education HR? I'm an HR program manager w/20 yrs of corporate experience and have been laid off for 16 months. I just received an offer for a Recruiter role in a major city's school district. I'm a bit taken aback by the salary offer amount. The range was 58K-78K. They offered me 67K. I asked if the amount was negotiable. The recruiter warned that it's firm and that the salaries are banded. I'm in dire need of a job for financial reasons. Is this a normal recruiter salary?

In public education HR there are salary schedules with step/grade based on education and experience. It’s not negotiable and in this market a reliable job with a pension is highly competitive.

Unfortunately, that seems pretty normal based on my experience. It's low considering your experience level but if it's firm, it's firm. If I were you, I would take it and just keep looking for something outside of education.

You’re right. I absolutely don’t push it. I’ll take it for now and keep looking. Sometimes it’s easier to find a job when you have a job.

Hello,

With 20 years of corporate HR program management experience, it’s completely understandable to feel surprised by the offer. In education and public-sector HR, salaries are often banded and less flexible than corporate roles, and recruiter pay in school districts does tend to fall on the lower end of the range you mentioned. That said, accepting this role can still be a strategic step, it gets you back into the workforce, adds education HR experience to your profile, and may open doors to higher-paying internal roles later.

Trust yourself, taking care of your immediate needs doesn’t mean giving up on your long-term goals. This can be a bridge, not a setback.

Yeah I agree with a comment above, take the job and see how it goes, can always look for another job while you currently have one.

They offered 67K and you have been laid off for 16 months and you are in dire need of a job??? This is a no brainer! What is wrong with you? Take the job with gratitude and wish yourself Merry Christmas!! Another responder encouraged you to take the job because it is easier to find a job when you have one!! Great advice!! Why is this a difficult decision for you given your circumstances? What state is this new position located? Take the position today! You did, right? Let us know. Merry Christmas!

Good choice. Good to recognize ego…. that's ok!! Good luck and Merry Chrstmas! Btw look for things to really improve in Pennsylvania!

That offer would give me pause too. I would weigh mission and stability against long-term earning trajectory. Sometimes a step sideways is fine, but it should still respect your experience.

UPDATE (RE: SoCal Assistant Controller Interview)

So after two weeks of waiting (and giving up on the idea of getting the job really), the recruiter got back to me.

They said due to month-end and quarter-end close they were busy and couldn’t get back to me as quickly for a “good update”.

The recruiter said the CFO enjoyed our call, she, the CFO, will call me next week directly to “discuss some final things”.

Not sure if Im hired or not, but are there any questions about the job, comp (cont.)
