Generally speaking, that sort of thing has never bothered me. But in recent years my honest answer would be that it probably depends on the circumstances. Voting for a party isn't that big a deal, but some people have become so extreme in their beliefs that it's honestly disturbing. So if someone gave indications that they'd gone way down the rabbit hole, sure, that would make me think differently of them.
Yes exactly! It's the extremes that warrant some caution for sure.
I think this is a bit of a regional issue. Some areas are completely dominated by people who strongly lean one direction or the other. To express any other opinion is to ostracize yourself. 20 years ago my are leaned hard to one side, today it's pretty mixed and generally safe to express opinions.
There is another issue. When someone discloses that they lean left or right it's no big deal. The only effect that it has is that I'm slightly careful not to offend their beliefs with what I say, but in no way makes me value them any less.
If someone says they are a communist it's a whole different issue. There are occasions that someone expresses political beliefs in opposition of basic human rights, fanaticism and violence. Certain political beliefs identify individuals as potentially unsafe and this does change my opinion of them, as it should for anyone.
I think your response is really well thought out and smart. For some reason we are valuing our fellow human beings as being "less than" for voting a certain way. But like you said it is just the extremes we should be wary of. Otherwise, everyone deserves respect. Like you, I try to tread carefully!

I realllllllly try not to let anyone at school know my political leanings! That being said when I hear about others, I usually have an initial opinion in my brain. I always keep it there! I loathe the drama.
Same here! It's just not worth it. Like I personally don't mind if someone tells me, but usually when they do I still don't tell them mine lol
I generally don’t want in on those conversations, but have on a rare occasion expressed my feelings after hearing them daily goin on and on about their candidate to the point of shaming anyone else for not agreeing with them. I draw the line and let it known I disagree with them, but that should never ever draw lines in the sand when working together for the same goals. I end it with letting them know I will always respect them for standing true to their values. If they wish to do the same then I’m fine, but if they choose not to, I look at it as it’s their loss for not allowing themselves to grow by hearing why others feel the way they do. It’s a learning experience to me, until it becomes a case of them basically calling you an idiot, stupid, etc.!
I have never heard anyone talk politics at work. I couldn’t tell you who voted for whom, though on a rare occasion I can guess based on their verbalized opinions. It’s never been an issue.
