It’s easily taken me a whole year before I felt really comfortable at a new job. But it’ll only take a few months before I know whether I want to stay long-term or not. Anybody else get a new job and know pretty soon that it wasn’t going to be for them?
I’m in the same boat. I feel like most jobs I’ve had it’s taken me at least 6-12 months to sort of understand what’s going on. Definitely have some of those days where I’m wondering what’s my place.
I would say the collaboration with multiple different disciplines and then problem solving questions that come up in a group. I also enjoy having ownership of the projects that I do.
At least 6months to know the overall picture and contribute to your team
6 months usually to get settled
6-12 months easily to feel “comfortable” especially if your not familiar with the new processes and equipment. By year 2, I feel like I’m hitting my stride. Also, depends on how large the facility is, how complex the processes, etc.
Just started a new job last week and honestly wish I had a settling period.. my manager wants me to familiarize myself w the entire project I just onboarded for and give a ‘new guy’s perspective’ presentation on it in two weeks lol
Not that this is a bad thing, I’m excited to get my hands dirty early but the pressure is certainly on
Coach
Because you don’t have a goal. I follow the Top Gun principle. Every job I’ve had, I look for the best of the best of the best. Say I am hired in as a Design Engineer 1. I first look for the qualification of every single level (of individual contributor). Example is if the company hierarchy is
1) DE 1
2) DE 2
3) DE 3
4) Senior DE
5) Team Lead
6) Manager.
Then I look for the Top Gun who is the Senior DE. That will be my target. I don’t wait for assignments, or trainings. I actively volunteer for projects or seek trainings. If I have to pay for the training myself, so be it.
