Does taking the operator role at a PE fund limit your opportunities of moving into an investor role later? I have strategy consulting background at a big 4. I am interested in moving into PE in an investment role. Frankly, it’s been tough trying to break in with my background and currently working on joining MBB to increase my chances. Recently, I have had recruiters reach out for operator roles at a few funds but worried taking this route will limit my chances. Anyone moved from ops to inv.?

Would you rather try to get promoted/climb the career ladder or try and grow your side hustle into a larger enterprise while working your day job? I’m at a point where I’m very comfortable where I am and ready to move on to higher paying but more stressful roles. At the same time I’m also pursuing a side hustle that can be lucrative if done correctly but comes with more risks. Would you 1.) try and get promoted while pursuing a side hustle or 2.) stay in current role and focus on side hustle?

Sanity check. Going to preface this by saying I'm not in a rush. I wanted to get some good consulting experience so joined EY out of UG. Got early promo, but I've reached the point where I'm no longer growing (learning) much on my current team. I've become very interested in PE and want to give that a shot. I lack the resume experience.

Thinking to move within EY to an M&A focused group SaT or EYP. Do ~2 years and see if I still want that. Will that tick the box for most PE shops?
