I’ve been daydreaming of a community loom in the school or classroom. Has anyone done this or have any tips? I’m wondering if people will want to participate or take the materials and “redecorate””.

Sounds like fun! I think you will get plenty of participation. I would start one with the senior art students, to leave their "mark" on the school.

I bought the Friendly Loom and the kids loved it. It was a free time activity for K-8. I set it up to make 4 small weaving sections instead of one large. Up to 8 kids at a time could use it- one on each side of the loom. Most of the weavings ended up small (approx 8x10). We glued googly eyes and wooden shapes to them to make owls and other animals. They are hanging the room and always get commented on.

We have a large free standing loom in one of the art rooms and someone cut some of the warp strings when a substitute was there. This is an intermediate school so hopefully at the high school level you'll have more respectful students. Best of luck! I think it's a great idea. Maybe put it near a camera with the rules started so you don't end up with inappropriate stuff on it.

I'm transitioning from teaching 8th grade mathematics at a public school to teaching a 7/8 self-contained classroom at a charter school.
Any advice for teaching mixed grade levels or multi subject is appreciated: scheduling, classroom setup, subject order, behavior management, etc. I'm struggling to find my rhythm with only 6 weeks before kids return.
Thanks to everyone for your commitment and time, enjoy your summer!

I have high school children of my own, but disciplining high schoolers has always intimidated me for some reason. I have excellent classroom management, but I feel like high schoolers are a little smarter ab getting around rules and less worried about consequences.

It only took me 7 years to figure this system out.... posting in case it helps anyone else! I color coded my classes and printed off numbers according to the number of kids in my classes. I then assign each kid a number that corresponds with my gradebook. When they turn in their projects, they put their number with it. This way, no contact and I can easily see who has and hasn't turned in their projects yet. I take the list down once they remember their number.
