A few months in is not bad at all. I hated "that paperwork-y stuff" early in my career and never paid much attention. I lost out on a lot of benefits until I decided it was time to learn proper adulting.

Totally feel all of this, same boat here. I brushed it off at first because it felt like too much. It’s wild how much you can miss out on without even realizing.
Hey, at least you started! It took me two years to start setting money aside for our $401k plan. I wanted to, I just had tons of bills to pay and hated seeing the money come out of my paycheck. Definitely lost out on a good amount, but I'm doing my best to make up for that now.

That’s such a good point. Debt really messes with your peace of mind. Prioritizing that first makes total sense.
My company doesn't offer a plan like that, but if they did I would definitely take advantage of it. That's one of the things I have in mind if I go looking for another job. I feel like I really need to get with a company that has a good benefits plan. Up to now I haven't paid enough attention to those things.

Ugh, that’s so frustrating. It really should be more common, benefits like that can make a huge difference long-term.
I am embarrassed to say this but when I started at my new company I went an entire year without putting anything in my 401k. I must have thought it defaulted to the amount they match which is 6% and never double checked it. I went one day to see how much was in there and realized I hadn't contributed for an entire year.

Oh no, that’s such an easy mistake to make, especially when you assume it’s all automatic.
I didn’t really pay attention to that until I was older. In hindsight I left a lot of money on the table by not taking advantage. 401k match is a big one for me now, make sure to get everything I can out of the company because that is a part of your compensation for working there.

Ugh, same here. I didn’t think much of it back then, but now I’m like why didn’t I pay more attention? I’m way more on top of it now and trying to make the most of what’s there. Live and learn, I guess!
The best time to start investing in your 401(k) is the day you turn 18. The second best time to start is TODAY.
If at all possible, put in whatever they will match (it's usually 3-5% of your salary, at either 50% or 100% matching). That is FREE money. You don't pay tax on the money you put in, and it gets doubled. Also, if you don't make a lot, you also get a tax CREDIT (that means it comes right off the taxes you owe, not an income deduction) that can really help out.
