Ethnically chinese ppl in the UK (not british) - do you feel a little ostracized working here?
I am not from china but of chinese heritage. Grew up in SEA. I moved to london for university. I am now working in a majority british company and while I have never experienced overt racism, I find it difficult to fit in with my english peers. If I am at lunch with a small group, I am always left out of the conversation. Feeling a little demoralised, like there is a social code i dont understand.

Op, i know exactly what you mean - no one has ever been overtly racist, but I’ve definitely felt left out of the conversation and sometimes that makes me think that what I’m saying is less interesting.

I’m ethnically Chinese and have spent the past 10 years studying and working in the UK, so I don’t think the problem is not having any shared experience.

What’s weird is that I get along incredibly well with my British friends at school and some of my closest friends are British. I’ve only started noticing this “barrier” when I entered the workplace.

Thanks so much for sharing. Makes me feel less alone.

Try coming to the US to work, you’ll make friends at work much easier and Americans are much friendlier I find.

I'm British born Chinese. I find it pretty easy to socialise with colleagues my age regardless of background but have the same feeling as you when I'm hanging around an older crowd.

I have a few SEA colleagues and I can see that they're feeling a bit left out. I agree with you, it's never anyone overtly trying to leave anyone out, but sometimes because of a language barrier (slang etc) or the topic of conversation (usually something to do with growing up in the UK) it's hard to include everyone. I will often make an effort in the group conversation to try and include people that feel a bit left out but that doesn't always work.

That being said, when I hang out with an exclusively SEA crowd, I will feel left out. Again, it's not by purpose, but sometimes they will speak about topics that I have nothing to contribute with, like Malaysian politics or mayalsian schools. I will make an effort to engage in the conversation by making UK comparisons and I find that works quite well.

But I agree with you, it can feel like an uphill battle and take some time to get used to before you can feel more comfortable in these social interactions.

Just started a new role in industry 2 months ago and my manager sent me a long email today saying he is not happy with my performance and is not at par with my level. He also pointed out list of instances when my submissions were late. Some of the things I agree but not all. Should I reply back or talk about it on our one on one and what to respond. They might be building a case to let me go.

So, I just fired my first employee as a manager and I'm heartbroken. He was a great, great person but after 6 months on a PIP he just wasn't cutting it skills-wise. I know he was the provider of the household and his wife didn't have a job since she was raising three young ones. Needless to say, I had to take off because I felt terrible, sick to my stomach. How do you deal with firing guilt? Is that a thing? I can't help but feeling like I did something wrong.
