Ever notice how some associates get groomed for leadership while the rest of us just grind quietly in the background? It’s like there are two different careers happening under one roof: one with visibility, mentorship, and stretch assignments, and one where you keep the lights on. I’m trying to figure out which track I’m actually on, because it sure doesn’t feel like the leadership pipeline. How do you even tell which path you’re on before it’s too late?

It’s important to have a partner mentoring you and opening doors. I’d agree that if you aren’t feeling that then you probably aren’t on that track. If you’re 2+ years at a firm and they aren’t investing in your development, I’d say it’s time to lateral.

Trust your gut, nobody is going to tell you until its too late. If you're a sixth year or above leadership and BD (or adjacent) opportunities will start coming if you're a made person.

If you have to ask, you're probably not on the leadership track

You’d know if you were part of that group

If you can already see a disparity in how people in your class year are being treated, then you already have your answer.

If you can't, you figure out what track you're on by chatting with your classmates and seeing who's getting what opportunities. Also make sure you're explicitly asking for opportunities that would put you in a good position for leadership roles. If John always gets whatever experience he wants, while they keep saying unfortunately they couldn't make an opportunity for you this time, but maybe next time, then you already know what's going on. Etc.

Looking for some advice.. Manager left, I was given their work. Promoted few months after, but not to the role of my previous manager. Rec opened, I applied, didn't get it. We hired the new person and in my hopes to offload some of that original work back to them. I was told I'm going to continue to do everything my previous manager was doing. I'm still not a product manager even tho my previous manager was and the new manager is. Applying to jobs and concerned my title is holding me back.
