Hi all. I am trying to determine if I am being compensated fairly. I am a tax manager (about to start my second year as manager) and have been with EY since staff 1. I was promoted to manager in June 2020 (during covid) and received a 7.5% raise. The class above me has mentioned they received much higher raises during their promotion years. My base salary is now approx. 97K. Any insights would be extremely helpful. Thanks!
Any news from anyone, especially during covid?

Everyone is wrong. You're right.
what exactly has Modi done in last several years with his absolute mandate...All he is doing is strategizing elections after elections...his entire cabinet along with him including home minister is simply campaigning from panchayat level to muncipal ,state level elections..is that the work of a prime minister ,home minister and whole machinery in this pandemic?
For a start he was quick to declare a premature victory over COVID in an international forum which was quickly followed by a back to normal attitude because - weddings, Holi, Kumbh and the inevitable election rallies. And now we are getting hammered a lot worse than last year.. this new variant is infecting entire families.

Yea people are definitely at fault but guess who can make laws and enforce them? Guess who can promote vaccine awareness instead of election rallies? Guess who can pass something similar to defense production act to manufacture vaccines at record speed. Guess who can fast track vaccine approvals for other vaccines (eg Modern, Pfizer). Guess who can define safe opening guidelines driven by science and analytics. Can you care to answer any of these?
We don’t do that here.
Going by your logic, why blame corruption on Congress? Didn't people know not to take bribe and not launder money? Why should govt be blamed for individual actions?
Yes OP. Holi and weddings are the primary reason for COVID surge. Kumbh, massive rallies in Bengal (and then bragging about 2.5 lac attendees) has absolutely nothing to do with COVID.
Oh let’s not forget the Ind vs Eng cricket matches in Narendra Modi stadium.. world’s largest cricket stadium!
If a business makes an error we ask the CEO to be accountable.
If a family member makes an error we complain to the head of the family.
But if the country suffers, it’s ‘Both sides’ at fault.
I really wonder what it will take for some of us, whether on this board or outside, to hold this government accountable. Clearly even the deaths of more than 1,000 people a day is not enough.

I am assuming you are in the US. Are you not reaping the benefits of the federal govt and state govt efforts of vaccinating everyone at an accelerated pace? Of course people are to be blamed, but India has always been a government heavy society. So it’s natural for people to be obsessed with any success, and blame for all failures.
I personally think blame has to be taken both sides, and anyone who blames just the government or just the people singularly is obviously skewed in their opinion. Also, as for the vaccine rollout, as a person who’s aware of rollouts at a few states, rollout has been really efficient and fast, especially considering the massive number of people our country has vs. the US. I think the situation arose more from a cognitive dissonance of the country as a whole, which includes 90% of the people, and a sense of communal tiredness and intention to move on, with a belief that corona had left. The same is across many countries and communities, except probably the most educated and liberal enclaves that most of the commenters on this post (including me) live in.

If the government has done a better job, we would've been saying, despite the government's best efforts the people did not comply.
That clearly did not happen. People acting like morons is a given, whether European or South Asian countries. The differentiator is government competence.
Given that with the same people the situation could be much better through better governance, the fault lies with the government.
Can’t have it both ways.. create strict laws/rules so that people are safe, oh wait ease them up so that we can make an earning, hmm now that the laws are eased up let’s party, oh crap people are dying wtf is the government doing.. create stricter laws/rules so people are safe... and there is your full cycle.

I think there is also smart vs dumb planning.
1. Smart planning: temporary lockdown, significant govt assistance for the disenfranchised, job protections - combined with setup of additional hospital beds, oxygen supplies and use India's inherent global excellence (IT, textile manufacturing and drug manufacturing) to deal with contact tracing, mask and ppe manufacture and vaccine deployment.
2. Dumb planning: lockdown the entire country on a moment's notice (should've learnt from the demonetisation fiasco - Modi has a unique ability to f up really good ideas), sink gdp by almost 20% , see no substantial drop in covid, open everything up again. Implement no S.O.Ps, etc...
Apart from Kumbh, Bengal rallies and the likes, India exported 6 crore vaccine shots. Why did we do that? Were 70% of folks vaccinated? Whereas US stocked on vaccine raw materials and now Serum institute does not have enough raw material post June. Who could have controlled that? Who could have controlled international travel knowing there are variants circulating in other countries?
Vaccines raw material is only for covaxin that accounts for only 10% what about other 90.
Why did india gift/sell vaccines to other countries when there requirements where not complete.
I think the strong lockdown last year worked so people got complacent - not just the government, but people also. So many folks I know were out socializing and attending dinner parties etc and now the disease is back with vengeance.
In hindsight, the criticism of the lockdown was excessive. And perhaps it should have been continued a lot longer till everyone got vaccinated since bringing case numbers down to zero like NZ is very unlikely in a country so densely populated.
Also I'm not sure why more people didn't get vaccinated. The vaccine hesitancy is a real problem.
What about election rallies ?

It’s like hunger games in India. I mean yeah, let’s continue to blame people for all this since they a free the one looting. Govt has nothing to do with any of this.
Happy to see good sense prevailing. Even until a year back such forums were a 50:50 split pro and anti Modi. His years will be a big shame in history. We need someone educated to drive the country and not someone who acts on his whims and fancies.

Supreme leader’s word is the final word!
Just my 2 cents. I believe the failure is from both end. Government for letting this crisis go to waste. It was great opportunity for India to unite the whole nation by following JFK motto - Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country. I don't care who is sitting in that PM seat but we can agree on one fact, which is it's hard to coordinate and plan out for approximately 1.2 billion people. As such, government should have taken this opportunity plan out what can be done if they had to handle second wave.
I blame people for not having common sense. Despite having one of highest literary in the world, people failed to understand severity of covid and taking precautions. Such as don't attend public events and wear mask all the time.
My personal belief is more American. Don't expect government to fix anything.
Overall scary part is if you look at it from biowarfare standpoint, India is screwed. Regardless of political parties, they need to look at this from national security interest and start drafting plans similar to any other democracy.
America will always prevail. The political system is slow and messy but it works.
