Executive Director role at JPMC or "Head of" role at Google? which to choose if chasing prestige / title?

Aren’t you too old to be chasing “prestige”? Prestige makes sense first role out of college, because it can lead to high paying roles down the line. But at some point you have to pivot to chasing $$ or else what the hell is the point of all that prestige? You can’t buy anything with prestige….

Those are both middle management roles in completely different industries… Those in the respective industries will know what level each is at, and they’re also not going to care about prestige vs actual experience if you’re trying to move industries. To a total outsider, Exec Dir is obvious more impressive sounding, and JPMC and Google are both well known. But this seems like a completely ill advised way to live your life.

Does the 'Head of' report to a Director at Google?

If so, isn't that your answer?

funny

Chase the industry you like, not only a title. Insiders know what each mean. Googlers I know are at least 10x happier with accelerated tech comp than those who went to JPMC

From a pure leveling perspective, they’re at par. Next level up at jpmc is MD and there is a big range within MDs and then C suite. Google (assuming is L7) next level up is Director then MD and VP then C suite. If you care a lot about prestige/title, I’d try to figure out how many layers from CEO, that could be a better indicator if one is “greater” than the other.

Fwiw, do you really think JPMC is as “prestigious” as Google?

I didn’t know there was a comp bowl!

Titles are always a mess, but L7 matters more than anything else. Also, I’m sure you understand this “scope” is not title. There are those who run billion $ businesses who are L7 and tons of small jobs that are also L7. There is a big range of scope/comp just like partner :)

I’m at JPM and it’s a well known fact that there is an unspoken Jr ED vs Sr ED layer (maps to Google L6 / L7, respectively), esp depending on your LOB.

From the fact that you’re even comparing the two firms I’m assuming your offer is for some sort of corp dev/strategy role, which tends to be a bit flatter (less EDs managing other EDs) esp in CIB.

Find out whether your potential MD manages other MDs or mostly EDs, and who your main stakeholders are. If you’ll be working directly with the CEO of your LOB then that’s a good sign that you’re coming in as a higher-level ED. If you’ll be reporting to another ED then just know you’re at the lower end of ED and will take a while to find a platform to make MD (assuming this next job isn’t just a calculated stepping stone and you want to build a career here).

So I say this with complete humility and an understanding that this is a fortunate-ish situation to be in. I’m in a position where I am tied to nothing, I have no children, spouse, or house. My job, which I’ve loved until some recent significant leadership changes, is sucking the life out of me and I think it may be time for a change. Because I am able to “pick up and go” I’m open to opportunities and locations. I’ve never worked with a recruiter but was hoping I could get some recommendations!

Has anyone dealt with stuffing allocation in a non-hedge fund context? It seems even in the HF world the law is fuzzy in using aggregate reverse 704c principles in stuffing allocations. Like, sure, the market is there but no authority really blessed it (other than some Cravath partner’s article in Tax Notes in 2013). If we are talking asset class that isn’t really like marketable securities but might be able to treat it similarly solely by virtue of, say, valuation on a quarterly basis (contd)

I've been working at my current job for about a year now and I'm finally beginning to understand how the company works.

It's not easy, though. It's a small company, which means there are only a few of us in each department. There is no dedicated training team, so we all have to learn new things on the fly through trial-and-error or by asking our coworkers for help. The management team seems to be pretty hands off when it comes to project management and project direction, so it's up to us engineers to figure out how we want to spend our time and who we want to work with.
