I feel that analytics skillsets are underappreciated at MBB - partners love to talk about AI and data, but the culture generally doesn't understand or value statistical modelling over traditional excel models and ppt. On the options you mentioned - consulting is not the best option for corp Dev (IB is much better), for operational VC an exit is possible if you can align yourself towards a mix of operational, org and due diligence projects (difficulty to do so is firm and luck dependent). If you can get on the right projects, no one will care per say about what team you are in (if they do it implies a poor culture anyway)
Yes - it's more dependent on what projects you end up working with. There is more flexibility to focus on strategy/finance as a generalist though so it's probably the preferred option if you are really set on more PE/VC investment opportunities.
My experience coming out of undergrad (looking at job market/peers) is that nowadays, you are actually behind in career progression and comp if you are a generalist
Agree with SA1. They say start be generalist because they want you to do every damn thing. My recommendation- specialist is the way to go. Think long term. Helps even when exiting. Data analytics is the best way forward.
Can you add more color M1 ?

I think we would have more potential going into data analytics roles. A key thing a lot of data analytics people lack is business acumen and we are set up well for success in those roles!
Agree with M1 & BCG1 ā while specializing is the way to go given COVID-adj. biz climate going forward, business acumen is important for analytics folks as they climb up the ranks and work on higher impact initiatives. Helps with prioritization, framing, etc. However strong technical skills are becoming increasingly important for attractive exits, so itās a good bet to really hone your technical abilities
