OP - regardless of whether you use your Amex I know several people who have had expense audits. They go back and audit 3 months of expenses (all previously approved). The audit is extremely detailed to the point where questions were the likes of "per review of XYZ website, they are not open for breakfast. Please explain expense". I know 1 person who was terminated and 2 people who had a terrible 6 weeks during the audit. Use your American Express and sign up for the points. This is a stupid reason to get terminated and worse trying to explain to your next employer.
We all had to take "expenses training " last year in which it was specified that we had to use our AMEX for travel and not use personal cards just to get the points. Something to do with an EY person having an "inappropriate " relationship with a client contact and charging their activities back to the client.
I'd avoid using personal cards if possible. Could result in them opening an audit into all of your expenses if you get flagged
@EY 4 - do you know that for a fact or are you speculating? I mean they could certainly audit an expense report and request an explanation as to why your AMEX wasn't used, but to retroactively audit all expense reports that were previously approved? I've never heard of that.
@EY4 Thank you! I'll be doing that for sure.
I lost my Amex one week on an advisory project and just out everything (flight, hotel, car) on my personal credit card and never had an issue. Just made sure not to lose one of those or then you're in some trouble.
And I mean ultimately denied, not audited and warned. The firm policy states that you might not be reimbursed for expenses if you fail to use your AMEX, but is this just a scare tactic?
If you have a good reason like, misplaced Amex, doesn't take Amex (likely not to fly at Marriott) and you provide a receipt I think you're fine. I wouldn't do it often though...
Yeah
EY 2 - care to provide details? What was your reason for not using your AMEX? What was the expense?
I know people that it has happened to that they had to previously explain expenses and provide receipts etc to things that were already approved. Not sure if it was a result of not using corporate cards but just know it can happen in general
We all did that WBL like durinf September where they said you can't user personal cards for hotels anymore. Id just reach out to the partner of the engagement say your getting push back and need approval, if that doesnt work reach out to your counselor.
Always use the AMEX. I had to use my personal card for a hotel stay because I had lost my Amex and was waiting for the replacement to arrive, and it was very hard to get the charge approved. Had to submit evidence of the lack of arrival of my replacement card. Sign up for the Amex points.
What are AMEX points?
Membership points. Pay $90 for the year and accrue points that you can use on travel, gift cards etc
Former EY here. My senior's buddy had that happento him last Jan. Back in late 2015 they started cracking down on personal card usage.
EY3 is spot on.
Also I didnt know that they would be so detailed in audits like SM1 described.
EY 4 or Senior Manager 2, does that option come out in an email or something similar to ADO? I must have missed that last year. Definitely need to do that
You just sign up with Amex directly. You can call and enroll at any time.
