Go for the money! Planning your career around the immigration process is not a smart thing to do, espl with so much of volatility..
Cash is cash, GC filing means nothing for Indians to be honest. Better off just taking paycheck. You are banking on immigration reform more than anything else at this point.
Real question to ask, can you negotiate a higher salary at EY given counter.
Stay with GC, get in line. Wait 6 months- make your moves. I 140 gives flexibility for your future spouse to work freely which is more valuable than 50k plus the risk of Deloitte deciding not to apply for your GC down the road due to a different immigration climate ( at this point this is certain that things will change we don’t know by how much. )
Agree with D1..
Work at EY has become less interesting and I dont see a solid path to Senior manager. Which option is more viable?
1. Stay at EY, get I140 done in next 1-2 years then quit
2. Move to Deloitte, wait for 2 years to initiate GC process. Takes another 1-2 years to get I140. We’re probably looking at 4 years total from now. Is this too risky even though I have 5 years left on H1?
Go to D with more money. A 2 year delay in GC doesn’t mean anything in the grand scheme
Thanks. I don’t care about the actual GC, but I’m thinking having an approved I140 would mean that I can look beyond the 6 year maximum with H1B. Which is why I’m confused to accept the offer or not
If the 30K is going to make a big diff in your life now then I would recommend going to D. if there is a possibility of EB1 with EY then you would get GC directly in a span of 3-4 years. once done, you can go whereever you want for much higher salary. Also think about the year end bonuses, you will reach 170k in no time.
With hike around the corner, don’t you want wait and see, if you get a decent hike, what D offers may not be substantial $$ to jump at this point
My practice didn’t do well this time, layoffs happened as well. So don’t have much expectations
30 K won’t matter in long run . Having an approved I 140 has more value. You can get these jobs anytime. What if you run into RFE’s, denials etc . The risk is not worth the reward
Will give you my scenario, OP. I was told I can apply for EB2 GC after completing a year in US. And so I did apply...Document verification tool about 6 months. And when they were about to apply, the company suspended GC process for almost a year. After they resumed the process, it took another 6 months of document verification and then perm filing and after that came the i140. So it almost took away 4+ years of my h1b time..Instead if waiting for 4 years for i140 I should have tried my luck finding a better job with better prospects..and now that I have an i140, new employers don’t want to hire me because I don’t have much time left on h1b.. Planning around the immigration process has really not helped me..
Oh also, I am now independent, making extra 30k means I need to work some overtime. I cAnnot backdate that priority date by 3 years though. If someone says they will start your green card process 2 years later it means your priority date is 3 years later as it takes 1 year to prepare your app and finish other formalities.
OP, there is another aspect you have ignored. Your petition needs to be approved by USCIS. So, of you can get your petition approved before joining Deloitte then I would say go for it. Deloitte also has the highest rejection rate among big 4.
All firms will file GC in my opinion. However, the process is tedious. The law firm might take its time to do the work. If you have five years left then you have nothing to worry about.
Then we should be congratulating you on your new job😊
GC initialization to I140 approval took 14 months for me in PwC. If I were you, I would just stay in EY and get the i140 done in that 14 months and goto another firm at that time if needed..
There is another way here, not sure if you would consider. I had a similar offer from D and they told me that GC process will start after 6 months (didn’t believe them).
Take the D offer, work for an year and push for GC, at the same time look for jobs in FANG, Google starts GC process on day 0. D’s pay will give you bargaining power with FANG.
I did something similar ended up in industry, high paying job and they started my GC in 6 months.
Caveat:
Plan changes If you decide to get married to someone who can work only on H4 EAD.
2 earnings usually bring in more money than 1, so think about that.
Cool. I declined as well
