Wear N95 masks (no valve). Cloth or even surgical masks may protect others, but not you.
Also don’t hurry when boarding, as you’ll need to be in a line full of people and may board before the airplane ventilation system (which is proven to make planes very safe) is actually working.
I flew during the peak when things were super bad. I wore two masks (a cloth mask with a paper insert and a neck gaiter) and my sunglasses. I have a bad habit of touching my face so those certainly helped. I avoided people. I walked away from my gate wear things were empty. Kept spray sanitizer in my bag and sprayed every time I touched a public surface.
The key takeaway is stay away from large groups of people when you can. People ran around with chin guards and kids coughing.
I’ve only flown a handful of times so this is everything I do to make myself feel comfortable. I’ll update this as I think of more things
Look up what airports you’re going to just to see what’s open (in some only the newsstands are open, in others, all the restaurants are open).
In the airport, you’ll be required to wear a mask except for eating or drinking- find a quiet corner or table to eat at. That always makes me personally feel more secure.
When flying, I wear 2 masks. 1 normal medical mask against my fave and 1 neck gaiter. The only thing I know is that COVID is transmitted by spit. Medical masks have little gaps on the side so the gaiter covers those gaps. The extra fabric in front of the medical mask can’t hurt either
I've flown quite a bit since the start of the pandemic and most of the time I really couldn't tell there was a slowdown of air travel. Most airports and airlines have simply shut terminals and gates down with the reduced travel so what's open is still as crowded as ever. Social distancing? Lol. Middle seats open? Ha. Nothing like being crammed in an aluminum can with 100 other people at 30k ft during a pandemic without alcohol service on board.
