It’s hard. I always fought to remember, every single day, that the primary reason to work is to house & feed my family, and to support our collective well-being. In the long-run we’re all dead, and our work will mean very little. My children will remember they felt safe and loved, or they will remember a grumpy father. I’m working hard for them to remember the first.
I put down my tools on the weekend, and I am present.
I have a 3 year old and a 1 year old. Nothing makes you feel worse than a 3 year old calling you on your shit. It’s 99% being present and patient and it’s a constant battle given our profession. You’ll learn how to be more patient and it will probably be painful along the way.
Don’t be so hard on yourself, it’s a really tough gig, esp. while working consulting hours.
Realizing you want to be more present, patient, kind is the first step. Advice above is good and helpful had to tell myself the same thing. I prioritized work and clients with my first, but found ways to scale work back when I got to the breaking point / burn out.
Meditation, therapy, etc can also help, but I know time is really hard to find for that. Do make sure you find some time for yourself though, put your own oxygen mask on first before helping others! You got this!
