Closed on my place a few months ago. Didn’t use an agent. Found it (as well as some other places I looked at) through redfin/zillow and other online sites
I used a realtor after asking friends on Facebook for a local realtor that was familiar with the area where I was looking for a condo. People either posted a response or PM’d me the names of realtors that they knew. I chose one and I’m so glad that I did. She was extremely knowledgeable and helped me locate a great condo at a price that I could afford. I was very pleased with her. I’m a first time solo homebuyer—previously co-owned single family dwellings with my ex husband.
Started through Zillow, but the house I ended up buying we found through a realtor recommended by family. We had a very specific type of house in mind and the house we bought is perfect, but wouldn’t have shown up on our usual Zillow searches.

I think it’ll depend on the demand in your area plus the amount of time you can dedicate per day/week to look on Zillow.
In my area, a house was listed and within 24-hours the seller selected an over ask offer. We only found it bc an agent sent it to us, unfortunately we were out bid.
That being said, it’s really up to your preference and capabilities.
OP where are you looking?
I say Agent. I have bought and sold 10 times and usually there is an agent involved (so you're not going to save any money as a buyer anyway) though I've done a few wholesale/direct deals as investment properties. As a buyer, the costs are not on your ledger directly. Zillow and other online sources are often 'dirty' - not real, already sold, or poor facsimiles of the MLS. Agents will work for you and usually just want you to buy a house and not waste anyone's time - they rarely "sell" you anything - and they rarely try to get you to pay more than you need to--they are incented to close deals, period so they try to broker a deal that closes. Plus, if you fill out your info on zillow or realtor.com -- they are just monetizing your info for their paid agents (believe me I've got agent friends who pay for leads) so you get a random agent if you do that, not one you pick who strictly works for you.
I look everyday through Zillow (Redfin actually) and if it makes sense, I reach out to my agent.
