For middle school math: How many of you have tiered courses in your building? We only offer 2 options for 7th & 8th grade. In 7th you are either in general math or Algebra 1 and in 8th your have general or Algebra 2. My department is begging for at least one more tier, instead they want to give us longer periods (currently 44 min). What have you found that works?

Algebra I in 7th grade and Algebra II in 8th grade is pushing it.

Algebra2 for all 8th graders?

We lost PreAlgebra last year in High school. PreAlgebra was helping students gain the skills they were confused about from Middle school.

Algebra 2 in middle school, wow!

Our middle school offers Geom. to advanced 7th and 8th in addition to the other classes you mentioned. We also have an 80 minute block/ we teacher 3 blocks a day.

like

We have 1 option each for 6th and 7th. Then at 8th grade the students either take 8th grade general math or Algebra I.

What I find interesting is that we still group kids by grade in middle school instead of just by course.

Hello US fish!
What advice would you give a London-based writer/CD/ECD looking to work (remotely) for US-based clients? I’m relocating to Costa Rica for a few months next year so trying to make the time difference work. I don’t mind what sectors but, ideally, short-term writing gigs. Any tips on approaching clients/agencies? Which recruiters are worth reaching out to or are they all in league with Satan? Should I just give up now and get a job counting turtles? Thx

I found using GoFormative’s free version to be very helpful in teaching new topics to my students. I embed videos I make demonstrating how to complete a question, next I ask them to complete an example showing work, and then the next question they type their answer so it automatically alerts them to see if they answered correctly. It can be used live in a meet and on an independent virtual day. In my google meets, I’m able to give feedback on any question they have trouble with in real time.

I finally was able to convince my principal that we need a consistent math intervention at the MS level (grades 5-8). (Right now, we are just "doing our own thing," which isn't helping students progress much.) Does anyone have any suggestions? It would be beneficial to have some sort of progress monitoring tool as part of the program, if possible. Our classes run roughly 55 minutes (which is too long for an intervention, in my humble opinion).

Thanks for any advice.

I’m teaching summer school at a high school, and the co-principals have asked me to focus on only 2 to 3 chapters worth (what they are calling “2-3 standards” in the eight days of summer semesters. However, they are also asking me to give kids the midterm and/or final at the end of each period, which covers 4-5 chapters each semester. My question is this: “Is it legal by California Ed code for the administration to ask me to teach less than each entire semester, yet test each whole semester?”

Does anyone know a great 7th grade math workbook? Our school system does not buy the students books. I’ve taught 6th grade math for 20 years and have made all my notes, worksheets and and examples, but I’ve been assigned a seventh grade math class and don’t have enough time to get all of that ready. I feel like I’ve spent so much money on Amazon and TPT but it never ends up being what I want. It’s usually too easy. I would be grateful for any ideas, suggestions or actual workbooks names. Thanks.

Any good outside activities (math related) that I can do? I have Nerf guns and remote control cars I could use.

My district has finally gone 1-to-1. Is there a good app or website that I could use to have students submit answers anonymously while going over problems in class? I did this last week using Kahoot to go over a state testing review packet. It was great because I could see how many got the right answer and move on if no one missed the question. However, I would like to do it without having to create something in advance. I hope this doesn't sound confusing.
