I’m not art, but I’m creative leadership. Hope you don’t mind. I don’t think you’ll find one single satisfying answer. Maybe your book isn’t a match. Maybe you’re applying for an in-house role, and your experience is too agency-side for them. Or vice versa. Maybe you’re too digital or not digital enough. Throughout my career, I don’t know that there’s been a single “main reason” why I’ve gotten rejected from different places.
Without knowing the specific job, there’s not a specific answer. The only thing you can do is what we all do - keep swinging, and keep improving your book.
Agree with CW1. Also though - you can tell if you will get along with someone on the phone right away. As a manager I don’t want to bring in someone I have to babysit or someone who seems unmanageable, either. A personality match to me as a direct superior is a big factor for who I hire.
