I did the opposite move - business context is the most critical thing - depending on org you likely won’t have as many SME’s around you and everyone will be more siloed.
I’ve done it - the biggest thing is to be more of a general. Agency work tends to be fairly specialized. If you’re an analyst in house you might be tapped across the org
Have a decent understanding of their business.
Much more corporate and polished - where in agency a light and fun personality is required for survival, in house the ability to be polished and corporate in demeanor (very limited humor, no sarcasm, confidence with respectful curiosity) and dress (suit jacket) as first impressions will get you further. Prepare and ask 2x more questions about how to be successful in the role than things like benefits. If you are going to be the sole analyst advising a team on strategy lean into it - wear glasses if you have them and make reference to your interest in AI. If you will be on a team among other analysts, talk about examples where you were able to build bridges with non analytics teams. Ability to build internal relationships and stay in top of marketing and data trends is key and should be mentioned.
When you say non agency, do you mean client side, into a large business organization/Fortune 500 type of environment?
Things I've highlighted from my agency experience that I think large companies like to hear:
- ability to work efficiently and constantly optimizing, since so much agency work is timeline and budget driven
- striving to get to the heart of the matter, the core high value insights, and being able to bring alignment through how it is packaged and told, ability to get stakeholders aligned and create meaningful buy-in
- ability to collaborate and avoid working in silos or overly stringent definitions of department/role if reqd
Reasons I provide for why I'm interested in going in house:
- the ability to go deep and focus, as well as connect the work and outcomes back to new programs and initiatives. The nature of agency staffing models often doesn't allow for that
- more direct and meaningful access to customer data, business performance data, etc. agency side it is sometimes difficult to have that kind of access
- the ability to focus on a particular industry and client/prospect base. In agency land you often can face multiple and varied learning curves
What I avoid saying:
- I'm looking for better work life balance. The hiring org tends to hear that as you are looking for a slower pace and it infers they are "slow"
- that I'm a great solo performer can work very, very independently. So much of working within a big org is about collaboration and bringing others together around a shared outcome. You want to emphasize an ability to do that and not sound like a hotshot maverick
- that said, you want to sound desirable by emphasizing how being at an agency means you can't get complacent about process and tools, that you love making the effort to stay up to speed on the industry latest and greatest. They like hearing that, esp. if you add in sharing and educating others about what you know/have learned
I joined a startup and have found interviews to be more technical heavy than interviews at ad agency so make sure you are well prepared for all of that.
