$50 minimum for a junior. Maybe flexible to $40–45 in ATL but certainly not lower. Freelance rate is not just divvying up what a fulltimer earns. It has to be higher because you have to pay your own benefits and a slew of other costs.
CD1 - They've done two internships and have a pretty robust portfolio of social, experiential, (produced) radio spots and "wildcard" creative ideas so they aren't fully green.
SAD1 - They have been looking for full-time work across nation and gone to final round interviews, but nothing has stuck yet. I know they prefer full-time vs freelance; they want to work in an agency setting under a ACD/CD who can mentor them to better their craft.
$25/hr after taxes is like $17/hr or less, without any benefits. I think you can almost make that starting at Whole Foods as a cashier.
OP, why not be a great friend and have your junior CW friend to join fishbowl and ask for advice themselves? It sounds like they need to be grounded.
They are indirectly ruining it for us all. It puts downward pressure on all of our pay. Taking a job for $25/hr means other freelance juniors will have a harder time getting $50. Which means mid-level might not see $75, seniors won’t get $100, ACDs won’t get their $150, etc etc. Which affects CDs, too. Then it becomes even cheaper to have freelancers instead of fulltimers, which lowers all of our salaries.
OP I could sense something is amiss with your post. What I have found is, you can give someone the very best career advice—guaranteed to get a person hired at a 6 figure salary. But close to 80% of the people NEVER EVER take the cherry advice.
My advice for YOU, especially if you close to them, let them free fall. They need to sit for a bit in their mess and contemplate. When they come back to you, suggest they make money as their primary goal—by working as a copy editor. They can take a few cheap classes on how to do it. From there, if they clever enough, they can sneak in the back door to being a writer. This is more of an obtuse, tough love way of going about it. Hope that makes some sense. G'luck and remember it's all on them.
