D O N O T complete them early.
I'm amazed you still care. See above comment. Also, here's another response: (Partner, as you're aware, my last day is X. I will try to have this to you by Y date, and hopefully we can have this teed up before X date. Please let me know if you'd like to discuss.) Most will not want to discuss.
Yes, you’re wrong. You are still the firm’s employee, being paid with the firm’s money. If you don’t transition your cases, that’s on them. You can let them know you won’t be able to transition the cases if you keep getting other projects, but until you aren’t their employee anymore, they still control your work.
This seems dependent on the level of seniority - when I left my last firm as a senior associate I would have been close to committing malpractice if I had not transitioned my files prior to leaving (I had a number of matters that I handled independently).
Put the choice on them: “I’m currently doing A and B (transition memos or other transition work), and won’t be able to finish them if I do X or Y (new assignments), Which do you want me to prioritize?”
Just say no. You’re on your way out (presumably with a job offer).
They can’t do anything to you.
This whole thing about not burning bridges needs a serious caveat.
