Conclusion: never elect republicans, because the data is clear that they always blow up the budget and leave the mess for the next democrat to clean up.
Rising Star
Are we really going to pretend that republicans vote no in these instances because they can? If democrats have a House majority, they know it’ll pass. Then it goes to the Senate where Mitch McConnell must decide who the sacrificial lamb is to vote yes, a Republican least effected by their voters who can vote yes (e.g not in an election year, purple district, etc.)
That’s politics. It’s both parties.
Imagine voting for Republicans if one of your main worries was the deficit and national debt.
Federal expenditures to gpd doesn't matter since it's still part of GDP. Countries like Germany, Canada, Sweden and many others have higher percentages than the US. It's a problem when revenue doesn't not meet expenditures.
For example, if the US went to single payer then that percentage would go up. Nothing changed in the economy other than who is the payer (goverment vs individuals).
Pro
The deficit is concerning, one of the many reasons we should never vote for another deficit racing republican. Conservatives love to run up the debt giving free lacish lunches to the ultra wealthy, and kick the can down to so that our children will have to pay them.
The COVID debt was necessary and bipartisan.
The problem is, it got lobbed on top of existing insurmountable debt thanks to the Bush tax scam, Trump tax scam and Bush’s never ending wars.
Here’s the real question: does it matter? Intuition tells you yes, but we don’t actually KNOW, given the United States’ status as reserve currency of the world. It offers us a reckless spending hack that maybe knows no bounds— we won’t know the limit unless we find it. But this status itself is threatened by Republicans threatening to default, and by the MAGA cult’s open authoritarianism and election denying. If they kill Democracy, the dollar as reserve currency dies too. We’re lucky the world has maintained faith in us after Trump.
Doesn’t matter if Democrats or Republicans are in office, this will keep happening.
It seems like republicans would borrow to pay tax cuts while democrats would borrow to invest, like, in funding more chip factories that tax cuts would never trickle down to.
On one side you see the UK totally crashing economically because it never invested in itself and the other you see Biden wanting to bring things the world needs to US production, like semiconductor manufacturing 🤔
Student loan bailouts?
