Got screamed at again by my partner today. The other partners are wonderful. Glad I've been talking to a couple of recruiters as I'm now officially ready to move. Sigh😕.

I always tell people when they complain about retaining associates, all it takes is one toxic moment with one toxic partner to get an associate to start returning recruiters calls. All the retention bonuses and iPads won’t prevent that from happening, and then you’re going to lose a very valuable associate.

likesmartfunny

Bingo. I can buy my own iPad, I can’t buy being an employee in a decent work environment free of screamers

like

Sorry OP. No one should ever get yelled at.

likesmart

Unpopular view but never is strong. There are very rare huge fuckups that do deserve yelling but those should be very very very rare. If this is a regular thing, your partner is an asshole

I work for a toxic partner. Got an interview today elsewhere. The feeling is incredible. Make sure to give notice to the screamer, the sheer look on their face will make it worthwhile

like

Glad you’re moving on. Screamers are intolerable. Then there are the passive aggressive and demeaning/belittling partners who are also atrocious

like

Im sorry someone is speaking to you like this. You deserve better. Good firms to work at don't tolerate screamers.

I worked at a great firm that had one asshole who happened to be in my section, so I had to deal with him. I was so gaslit that I stayed for 2 years after he started screaming and being demeaning about my talent. I ended up leaving for a lot more money, and my firm now has been such a breath of fresh air because I've been here three years and have worked with one borderline asshole on one project. Everyone else has been great. Stay on those recruiters! There are nontoxic firms out there.

Same my hours are “considerably lower than where they should be” which is why I’m not being given any junior or paralegal support. I’m a lateral in a completely remote environment on pace to bill 2300 hours this year.

like

I regularly hear people humble ragging about billing 300 hours a month. I think they’re either lying or on coke.

Is it possible to ease back the work you do with that partner? If you enjoy working with others it may not be worth moving.

like

I was in a similar situation. You basically have to leave to get away from that partner

likesmart

No reason to scream.

I miss music. Like actual bands with instruments and vocal ability. Feels like the music industry is so hollowed out that multi-member instrumental bands like Fleetwood Mac, The Beatles, and even Metallica are no longer able to take root.

There are a few talented individual singers (Adele) a lot of awful mumble rappers, but no actual bands that will stand the test of time. Before I get called a Boomer, the problems with the music industry for new artists are well documented.

Looking for advice! I was approved to work remotely but my salary will decrease 10%. I received two raises so the decrease brings me down to my previous salary. I was told that it’s due to the cost of labor in the area.

So my junior lies a lot. About everything. They work hard and are reasonably smart, but they would swear a black pen is red and vice versa. When you catch them out, they keep digging. I like to think I’m very approachable and would never have an issue with someone not knowing something, needing longer on a deadline, asking questions etc. I’m writing this junior’s review and I’m wondering whether (and, if so, how) to bring this up?

I’m a first-time prospective lateral likely to get an offer shortly. I just received a lateral questionnaire that requests billable hours, rates, fees collected, etc. for the last three years. Forgive my ignorance but is this normal/standard? Do people actually answer these honestly? One of the reasons I’m leaving my firm is there isn’t enough work in my group so of course my hours are low.

How do I know Big-Law is not for me?

I am a first year who just started a couple of months ago and I am literally confused all the time. I did some small work for two partners and they loved it, so put me on new deals but the mid levels I am staffed with absolutely hate the work I do. One said the work I did was laughable. I felt bed because I spent over 25 hours on this. I wouldn’t be very bothered but the other Associates in my class are killing it. So I just feel dumb all the time.

I’m a 9th year in a mostly litigation-based practice group at a one-tier partnership firm. My group’s billable hours have been low the last few years, so making partner will be nearly impossible, and a counsel position is not viable long-term in my group. What’s the best option here if partnership is the ultimate goal? Try to get a NEP/counsel position at another firm, which is likely difficult in my market, or offer to take a class cut by a few years?
