D2 - and how about college undergrads? If you can't find a job in the US you won't study in the US and pay tuition. And foreigners who usually pay higher tuition rates subsidize quite a bit of school spend. Who will make up for that gap? Mexico?

like

Guys and gals, H1B dependent company like D4 and E3 have said!!!! Please keep that in mind when commenting. Can you all take a moment to read the bill before going crazy? There is no need to act like the world is ending unless you are planning to go join Cognizant or Infosys. The world might end because of Trump eventually, but not because of this proposed bill. Also, no foreign students will get screwed unless they plan to go join Infosys or Wipro after their Masters. So please, download Headspace and relax!

Makes sense to me. The $65K salary was set in 1989 and has not kept pace with the growth in industry salaries. This $130K represents a 35% premium to the average Computer and Technical salary in the US last year. H1B was meant to bring in highly skilled workers with specialized skills, not fresh college undergraduates or Indian outsourcing firms like in the Disney Case. See the NYTimes article for a profile on who gets these H1B visas: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2015/11/06/us/outsourcing-companies-dominate-h1b-visas.html

like

Proposed legislation we are reading about is only for H1B dependent employers (companies with 15% of workforce on H1B)- likely none of us. I don't know what is going on in Trump's small brain, however.

like

All of this is true, but if they raise minimum to $130k international students are fucked too

like

Its a bill so it needs to pass the senate, not an EO

like

H1B dependent employers? Where you reading that A1?

like

@D1 The point of studying in the US is because we have really good schools, not because they think they can work in the US full time. The US has super easy admission standards compared to countries like India and China.
Only 30% of international students even study a major eligible for H1B visas as is currently anyway. http://www.iie.org/en/Research-and-Publications/Open-Doors/Data/International-Students/Fields-of-Study/2014-16

like

@D1 There's definitely a discussion to be had about whether we want to keep international students in the US. I would support the creation of a visa for students of American universities.
But that's also a separate discussion than whether the H1B visa should be the route used to do so. H1B was specifically meant for highly skilled, highly paid jobs and if you read the NYTimes article, the majority of sponsored people are Indians who did not graduate in the US and are being brought over by outsourcing firms (over 1/3 of approved visas). 70% of H1B visas go to Indians, they most definitely do not make up 70% of the International Students studying in the US.

Also, this proposed bill also removes countrywide quotas on the green card process. That's a big win. And like lots of others have said, the $130 only applies to H1-B dependent company - which I don't oppose.

like

D5 there are, but not many, entry-level positions pays that much in tech giant. I know friends with CS PHD got offer around 100k to Google or LinkedIn. My point is most foreigner students will be screw over, even CS, not mentioning business or social science. Some biology students work in labs make way less than 100k. Are those not smart, skilled and legal workforce US need?

like

EY2: that $130K number is for H1-B dependent employers only. Therefore weeding out the staffing firms that blatantly exploit the visa and drive up the numbers of applications each year. It doesn't apply to most firms since the definition of H1-B dependent is when >15% of employees are foreign nationals on that visa.

like

Just checked LCA, Deloitte is not H1b dependent

like

^ Deloitte, you've clearly not read the bill nor read the majority of posts here. This doesn't hinder undergrads and MBAs from getting jobs at regular companies that are willing to sponsor H1-Bs. It simply makes it harder for offshoring companies like Cognizant and Infosys from bringing people from overseas on a low wage. If they are H1-B dependent, which I assume they are, they will be held to a higher standard. What's wrong in that? This helps clear your lottery numbers and the bill removes countrywide quotas for green cards. I don't see why people are mad about this...

like

130 seems low, we can go up to 170, so it's only for the top 5% of America

like

Wouldn't be sensible for those who already have it - it would affect so many companies

like

But it doesn't look like he cares for who or how many he affects...

like

Dir1- another exec order!

like

Applies to h1b dependent employers, if they want to directly hire h1b employees, they can still hire h1b once they make a good faith effort to hire citizens and residents

like

@D2 education is a means to an end. Most ppl go to college so they can pursue their career of choice and better their earnings potential. You usually find jobs through the school you attended. If it's an ivy - sure, you'll leverage its name to find decent placement back home. What if it's a top50 or a top100? Then you look for regional employers who have a track record with the school

How do I bring this up as the supervisor mentioned that we shouldn’t be talking about our raises.
