EQ is the best. Emotional intelligence opens the most doors
Said another way, not being able to read a room is a career killer.
Here are a few things that helped me in building strong relationships with my client counterparts. Empathy, ability to demonstrate that your client’s interest is at your heart (not self serving recommendations), genuine interest in the client’s professional and personal growth, staying in touch with them even when there are no projects, being their mentors, helping their kids with professional advice etc. Of course, dinners and other outings are table stakes.

I think it depends where you are. In Texas / Sourh, golf seems to be a much bigger part of networking than when I was in the northeast. I’ve not seen wine come up at all but I definitely think an appreciation of food / travel helps. All of that said, EQ is definitely the number one winner - you can be as good as you like at golf etc but if you’re a moron it’s not going to work.
Another one for the south - knowledge and appreciation for college football. If you’re talking to a UGA, UF, Bama, Auburn, Texas, etc. alum and you can chat about how the team is doing, it’s often an easy way to build early rapport.
