I told my supervisor about anxiety and now when he gets anxiety he calls me to vent about it bc he knows that I won’t judge, I’ll understand and I’ll talk him thru it
Bowl Leader
I disclosed my depression; my supervisor/agency was not receptive or accepting of it, and it did hinder me from having more opportunities or career advancement — but my experience shouldn’t deter you from doing it.
I think it’s good to be open about this sort of thing, and companies should be sympathetic towards their employees’ mental health.
I was lucky enough to have a positive experience with my manager. He allowed me the agency to a medical leave without judgment due to major depression and GAD. I know this isn’t always the case, but I was also able to connect with my HR rep shortly after for the following steps and she IMMEDIATELY dropped everything once I mentioned mental health. I’ve come to understand that most do not consider mental illnesses to be actual diseases or sicknesses and therefore do not know how to positively manage such situations.
Consider the kind of relationship you have with your manager. Is it an open and trusting space? If you do not feel comfortable enough to discuss mental health concerns with your direct manager, I would speak to another manager who you may feel comfortable with.
When I returned, my team was very excited and happy to welcome back. I did not and still do not feel that this is a hindrance in my career. If anything, this has deepened the trust I have with my management. From their end, they see an employee that loves her job enough to step back while she is not at her best. From my end, I am incredibly appreciative of the time I was given to manage my MDD and GAD.
