What Copywriter 1 said is 100% accurate, I live in NYC and I had BCBS. You will need to pay in full directly and then file a claim with the insurance. I’ve been doing it for years and (most) therapists will help you on how to file a claim and provide all the details you need to get it completed. Usually get the money back ~1month
Also correct about the medication, adhd meds are considered a controlled substance in NY and you need your psychiatrist to write you a new prescription every month after your monthly session.
I highly recommend my psychiatrist, I’ve been seeing him for almost 10 years and he is in midtown:
Dr. Carlos Ortiz - (212) 689-7232
Good Luck!!!!!
Just a note here it's often quite hard to find in-network psychiatrists pretty much regardless of your plan. You might be able to get out-of-network reimbursement for it, but most (and the best) ones don't accept insurance. Check your BCBS provider list on the site though, maybe some will pop up.
Also with ADHD medication I believe you have to see your psychiatrist every month due to the strict regulations around most ADHD meds - just another cost to consider if you pay for visits out of pocket!
Check with your primary care doctor. Legally they are able to prescribe these. I did the therapist + psychiatrist run for a year paying the psychiatrist $400 out of pocket each month for a 15 minute chat.
