Has anyone ever had a series of can you handle this/ run this meeting as a young attorney turn into you running the whole deal…. Senior attorneys are there for questions but otherwise MIA from the deal.

Yes I think everyone goes through this at some point and honestly it’s a blessing in disguise. They key is to communicate when you don’t know or need help- just be up front with the senior that you do not know what to do in X situation, you think it’s Y, but you need their input.

like

Agree with this, the experience I’ve gained has been invaluable. Murmurings of a promotion on the back of it too

This has happened to me a few times, so I would welcome any one else’s input. A few things that have helped me navigate this:

The partners/seniors generally don’t have time to review the entire transaction document/suite of docs so I do a thorough review and then take an issues list to them for their input. This way they don’t have to mark up the docs or review in detail but they can give in principle input on what is acceptable (e.g that is not market standard / that is too high etc) or anything I was unsure about.

I draw on other expert teams in my firm (with permission from the partner). I don’t work in tax, employment or environmental law (for example) so if I at all come across something in a transaction that relates to another field or even something I know a colleague is well versed in, then I rope in teams that do know it, to save myself the time and stress of trying to navigate something I am not qualified for or experienced in.

Be honest with a partner/senior if you need help. It will do more damage to the deal or client relationship if things go south. If they do not have time, ask them to involve other seniors or partners.

Keep the seniors and partners well informed. Even if they are not that close to the detail of the transaction, CC them in everything and update them regularly (bullet point email or quick 15 min update call) so they can catch problems before they become an issue.

Hope this helps. The good thing about being thrown in slightly in the deep end, is that you learn a lot.

This is happening right now. I’m 5 months qualified and running a front page news deal. Out of my depth is an understatement but everyone seems happy so far

I’m 7 months and feel the same, I’ve never done a deal like this before.

Happened to me when I was two months in. Ended up in a catastrophe because I had no idea who needed to sign-off on what and what needed to happen and the partner was completely AWOL unless chased relentlessly on the smallest question. Ultimately ended up blaming me and said to another partner he did not think I was very good. Years later still here and on partnership track (partner one still thinks that but it does not matter that much).

Yes, and I ended up running the department later. It was scary in the beginning, but I studied every second of spare time I had so I could figure it out.

Now I teach other attorneys the same area of law. I attribute it to having been dumped in the thick of it and having to really learn it all to survive.

What questions should senior associates be asking to get a better assessment of partnership prospects? For context, I’m eligible this year as an 8th year, but it’s more common to make it around years 10-11 at my firm (only equity partners), and I’m trying to determine whether to stick around or lateral before I’m too senior. I’m in a smaller group that historically promotes only one new partner every few years, and there are several others also eligible. Any questions I should avoid asking?
