Has anyone ever taken a lengthy sabbatical from the law? I have two young children and I’ve built a fairly successful solo practice. I have about $100,000 to cover up to a year off and separately, just under $1.5M in stocks. I’m feeling burnt out but believe I’m somewhat close to my FIRE number. I want to enjoy a slower pace of life with my kids, go to Disney a few times and cherish these early years. My plan includes going back to work doing freelance stuff for colleagues next year. Am I dumb?

Not dumb. What is FIRE if not freedom to live life as you choose? If that means scaling back or taking a sabbatical when your kids are young and will appreciate the time with you, then that is what the money is for. I have a very similar goal, (although sadly I’m struggling with having a child).
Another way I looked at it was “if I work straight through, I could FIRE when they’re about 12-15.” Not sure the kids would appreciate having me around in the same way as when they’re little.

I genuinely appreciate the responses. I’m leaning towards taking sabbatical. The thought of building my business back up and getting more resourceful with my finances is a little anxiety inducing but overall I know that I will look back and enjoy these memories. Work will be work and will always be there. Enough “glorifying the grind” in this money driven American society

Not dumb at all… it’s great to have the freedom to consider a sabbatical as an option. Just double check your math and expenses. Make sure you factor in healthcare costs (including unexpected).

I have been at my company for 3.5 years. One year ago (2.5 years into my employment with them) they re-leveled everyone and I was bumped to an entry level position on the terms that they changed my job title when they re-leveled, so “technically” I am at the early stages of my new title. Even though the job duties did not really change.
I’m not sure the best way to approach this. Has anyone else had a similar experience or know how I should advocate for myself?

If you’re succeeding on all the right metrics (i.e., leadership loves you, clients love you, you’re participating on pitches, you’ve brought in clients, and you’re set up to inherit a book of business), but you’re still not super into it, being promoted to income partner won’t change things, right? Worth sticking out to see or jumping to go in house at a pre-IPO, late stage startup you find super exciting and interesting?

I’m in this business to cure my inferiority complex. Making lots of money, working with fortune 500 clients and walking the streets of NYC with a suit, tie and briefcase makes me feel important and worthy.

I often wish I could be like my law school friends who either moved to small towns or have public sector or non profit jobs, wear sweaters and jeans to work and make far less than me, but are happy with their lives, feel a sense of meaning with their work and don’t need external validation.

Transactional associate. Lateraled 6 months ago and one of the biggest pain points has been my new firm’s inclination to “hop on a call”, which of course requires every single stakeholder to join. The end result being every call has 25 people on it and nothing actually gets done because no one wants to ask a question that could come off as silly. It’s destroying my ability to get anything done during the day. It’s a complete performance and it drives me nuts.
