Always buy a seat for the kids. Its safer and easier. Make sure your car seat has the FAA approval sticker (some crews check) and take advantage of preboarding as its a pain to install seat. Get Economy Plus (or equivalent) as the makes everything easier for car seat install and to keep kid from kicking seat in front.
Buy new toys ahead of trip and introduce during flight. Don't assume entertainment will work on the plane and have movies on iPad ready to go.
Make them eat or drink during ascent and descent since their ears aren't used to the pressure change. Always used a bottle when they were babies, snacks when they were toddlers, and gum now the he is older.
Check stroller (free) and get the gadget that temp converts the car seat to stroller for use in airport. (its basically the wheels and handle from a rollerblade suitcase). Can't remember the name, but you can get it on Amazon.
Check more luggage then you normally do so you aren't carrying on a bunch of luggage in addition to all the baby stuff.
My kid was always a great flyer so I never needed it, but was always prepared to buy cocktails for people around me.
Buy at least one seat for a child seat so you can strap them in for a nap. Made such a big difference. If you have to gate Check, make sure you double check your essentials identified above (paci’s,food, meds, toys, blankets, etc.). Be prepared to walk up and down aisles a lot. The dolly for the car seats was huge!!! Wheel those bad boys onto the plane and strap them in
Agree with West Monroe 1 - from age two we told our kid that if he behaved the pilot would give him a gift. That made it easy to pull back excessive behavior. A while after rake off we’d give him a toy and tell him that the pilot had given it, on the condition that he continues to behave well. A $2 car has made many international and transcontinental flights go smoothly for us.
Making sure the kids and you are comfortable will go a long way towards making for a smoother flight. If your kids fall asleep easily, check if you can fly a little before nap time. They’ll be awake through the excitement of take-off and then spend the majority of the flight napping. If they don’t fall asleep easily, then avoid any flights that cut into their sleep schedule as much as possible - otherwise you’ll end up with cranky kids and parents.
Also - pack their favorite book, crayons etc. Anything they like to do that does not involve noise.
Finally remember, as long as you are trying, most people will forgive kids making noise - they are kids and sometimes even with all your efforts, things go sideways. Just do your best and enjoy your flight
Done a max 4 hours from DC to Denver. Pack tons of and tons of various snacks and invest in cartoon themed headphones for TV shows or movies on a tablet. Also be patient they will exhaust you so be well hydrated and fed yourself before you start the trip
Leave extra time at the airport so you’re not stressed. Consider buying a seat for at least one of the kids. Two adults plus two lap babies especially if they’re big / close to 2 is a lot of bodies in a small space. Administer a bottle or something to make them move their jaw at takeoff and especially for descent to help alleviate pressure changes. Gate check strollers and car seats so you can just wheel them through the airport. A combo seat/stroller like Graco Click Connect 35 is very helpful but not necessarily worth changing if you like what you already have. Traveling with kids can be an adventure and not a chore Enjoy!
You guys are awesome. Thank you.
Take the red eye.
Benadryl...just kidding.
Buy a good double stroller that you can fold up and bag at gate real quick. Anything that requires a large effort to disassemble / reassemble will be annoying.
Just be patient. Recognize kids are highly variable. You’ll be fine. My 2 and 4 year old have 80 flights between them. Maybe 4 of those have been a cluster. Rest have been fine.
Flown to Australia. bought a seat for the kid, did the night flight
Night flights
Call the airline to confirm seat configuration. Not all rows have extra oxygen masks in case of emergency and if you don't book a seat for kid(s) you will have to move... Learned that the hard way.
