Lol yeah that happened to me. You should be prepared to leave immediately once you give notice (although thats unlikely, especially as a lawyer)
I knew i was going to quit but was waiting for conflicts to clear so I took a 2+ week Hawaiian vacation and gave notice the day I got back. Was asked to have my matters handed off in a week (which was easy because I already had coverage for the trip). Took 2 months off before my current job. Best decision of my professional life!

Give notice today. Dont delay not worth it.
Yep, early in my career. I was initially asked to stay the two weeks, then on the second day my boss said that was it, they didn’t want to teach me anything else I’d bring to my new boss (naming them specifically). Best move of my career!
I’ve lateraled before and it was the standard two weeks, but this time I’m more senior hence the concern…
I gave my notice whilst away on a conference and was terminated before the end of the day and kicked out of my hotel room lol. Didn’t even have a partner tell me that would be happening - it was all from HR type people.

Yes. That was the expectation at my last firm. You leave the same day.

Did they cut you off payroll or just told to leave and cut you off the system?
Never. Pretty much always still wrapping things up/transitioning deals/sending files to records (which I know is less of a thing now that firms have gone more electronic)/dealing with exit checklist stuff right up until the last minute.
However, at the last firm I left late pandemic, there was no stated RTO policy so I usually only went in 1-2 days a week. I went in and got most of my personal stuff the first notice week. Went in the next week to get the rest and my office was empty! They had office services pack everything bc they needed the office for a visiting attorney.
OS brought me the boxes (including files I was handing off) and I def lost some personal items, but thankfully nothing I really cared about (mostly firm branded swag and similar things acquired while there). Thought that was super shady bc I was legit still employed and they didn’t even notify me. Par for the course with that firm tho bc communication was awful and part of the reason I left.
