Don’t email me (with questions!) on Saturday 😡
How I’m feeling today..

Hi fishes! I volunteer with The Art of Good, a creative collective helping small businesses affected by the pandemic. They are seeking a little help from a media professional. Need an SEM POV for a small business looking to change their name and relaunch their brand. This is non-paid. More about giving back while in-between gigs. :) If you can help out or want to learn more, please reach out to me via LinkedIN. Thank you!! www.linkedin.com/in/karenkohn/

I used to reach out to random people when I was job searching and would usually do one of three things. 1. If they were high level, it was likely that they would speak at events or be featured in the trades. I would then reach out saying that I liked their speech/article and was curious to learn more about XYZ/do they have time to meet for coffee sometime? 2. If one of their clients was in the news or I liked a recent piece of work, I'd reach out to congratulate them or ask about how they made it happen, and start a connection from there. 3. Sometimes someone just has the job you want and you want to know how to become them. People LOVE when this happens, no matter what they tell you. They love feeling important and envied. Just be straight up and tell them you want to do what they do and want to learn more about how they got where they are. They'll love it. Good luck!
Yes. I dropped lines all the time. Sometimes they’re too busy, sometimes they can squeeze you in the cracks of their schedules. Just be patient. It’s a good way to build out your network of peers
SS1 - you’re awesome, I may drop you a line soon 🙂
AS1 - that’s reassuring to hear. It feels awkward reaching out without an intermediary but I realize I need to put myself out there if I want to make these connections. Thanks for the encouragement!
On that note, do you guys have tips for cold emails that were effective? I'm finding it difficult to start jumping into my first ones!
OP, where are you looking to go? How many years of exp do you have? (Thinkin’ maybe I can help you out lol not just being nosy)
Oof, that’s a tough spot :( I’m sorry! I went from a tiny shop to a much bigger one, and I was worried I’d lose that sense of “jack of all trades” that you need to be in a small agency bc they’re woefully understaffed, but found ways to make it work that I can leverage some of my other skills that aren’t specifically geared toward my job description. Happy to have a chat if you think it’ll help! Email me @ anonagencyfish@gmail.com ☺️
Ya just gotta do the cold email
Agree, I’d also love a few tips if anyone has any!
DS1 - this is really helpful, thanks so much!
SS1 - super late reply, I’m sorry! Seriously appreciate the thought - I’m thinking I want to go in-house (or to a really small agency), but it’s a little more complicated because I’m questioning whether or not I even want to be in the ad industry anymore at all (ugh). I’m kind of a creative at heart but I’m finding it difficult to navigate a possible change in direction, so I’d love to speak with other strategists who’ve done both or who have enough flexibility in their roles to wear more than one professional hat. So I’m basically reevaluating my entire career, no big deal ha 😅
