Yes. Plenty of people.
It is like 75% a popularity contest - both internally and externally
Most people who aren’t well liked don’t make it that far.

Also seen plenty of demotions / denied lateral partnership because of terrible rep/screamer rep
Would love to know the firm bc I guess I’m at one that gets stuck w screamers
Or course. Partners don’t want to be partners with people that they don’t like.

Yes absolutely
That's probably the most common reason people aren't promoted to partner lol (or for being pushed out long before you're ever up for considering)

Me :( it’s sad. You can work really hard, but if they just don’t like you that’s it
Well I think there’s a difference between colleague/work likeable and friend/acquaintance likeable. As long as you’re a respectful colleague who does great work and can get along well enough with people, I think you can go far.
I’m only an associate so what do I really know, but obviously there’s plenty of socially awkward and oddball partners, but I think they’re generally still well-liked by their peers because they’re great colleagues.
Although I am realizing I’m thinking in a vacuum that doesn’t take implicit bias into account - in that kind of situation where someone was never really given a chance to “fit in”, I’m totally with you.
What does pushing out look like? Are firms explicit about this?
If the firm has a subjective compensation system, then it’s easy to use it to pressure someone to leave for whatever reason, be it performance, popularity or discrimination (on any category). It was used in recent years at my old firm to push out partners who didn’t kiss management’s ass and partners over 60.
Do partners have to be promoted? Can they not start their own firms? (Curious)

Lol yes. In fact I think it’d be hard for someone who is not well liked to be promoted to partner unless they were just a money making machine
