Content Strategist is a highly disputed title - some people view everything as content so it’s pretty much a creative strategy role, others think it’s all about long form and placement of content on sites, others use it for micro social content. Which version is this role? (Used to be a writer, now a strategist.)
I just made that exact switch- starting the new gig on Monday. I’m in healthcare but went from 90k as a sr writer to 110k as a content strategist with a different agency
Gotcha. The thing to know about strategy is most people are making it up as they go these days, given how quickly everything changes. I’ve found it’s all about trusting your gut, tapping into your understanding of what creatives really need, and not getting too caught up in there being a right or wrong approach. That’s kind of the fun of it... it can be anything you want at the right place. Strategy roles also typically pay much better than creative roles, and the skills are more transferable outside an agency than working as a copywriter. I wouldn’t worry much about title. I once had a junior strategist title, after nearly doubling my salary from being a writer.
In hardcore content strategy, your deliverables are audits, taxonomy and hierarchies. Not articles and posts. Read Kristina Halvorsen. Search for content strategy articles from Boxes And Arrows.
And if the job isn't any of that stuff, it's probably an editor/writer role with a BS title.
As for becoming a strategist, study and get experience as a planner. Learn about qualitative and quantitative research methods. Get good at deciphering data sets into insights. Enjoy your life in PowerPoint and Excel.
It seems like it's a hybrid, writing for placement across many platforms and industry research. Interview is next week, and I do have a friend there to clear up questions before the interview. I'm also curious if this would technically be a downgrade from my current title, or if they'll meet me where I want my next salary to be.
What do you think my general asking price should be being that I'm moving into this role for the first time? I'm in the Midwest area and Glassdoor actually shows much lower salaries than what I'm at now.
Hey Associate Director 1, How did you go from writer to strategist? Are there any recommended schools or courses?
Senior Copywriter 1, I had the weirdest interview. They asked me about my design skills and the interview went completely off the rails from there. How did you sell your abilities to move into content strategy? I feel like I have the perfect amount of experience across mediums to go into a role like this... And the creativity to think outside the box. But after that odd interview I'm a bit confused about how I should move forward. Any tips would be greatly appreciated! I'm also in healthcare. Maybe that's the key... Finding a content strategy role in healthcare. This other position was in the travel industry (which I also had experience in).
