Has anyone taken a long sabbatical? Like a six months to a year? How did it work out?

Currently on a sabbatical. It’s been 6 months. I don’t think I’m going back to my firm now that I’ve seen the outside. My mental health has been rejuvenated and I’ve been advising several startups and possibly starting my own. I’ve traveled for myself with my children and spouse. Then I’ve traveled with my elderly parents. It’s great to not have to constantly be on my phone/laptop while traveling. I’ve never slept better.

Most important is the financial planning and the health care planning.

Happy to discuss via DM.

The sleeping better is the biggest change. Quality hours. No need for alarms

Do maternity leaves count? I did 2 of them, 3 months each, and it was wonderful. That last one was 15 years ago and I haven’t taken longer than 1 month off in a row (when I switched firms) since. Maybe should reevaluate depending on what you all say!

Yes, twice. Before making partner though. One of the best decisions in my life. Would do again in a heartbeat.

Yes but def took a step backward when returning. Best thing in my life to turnaround mental and physical health, personal relationships and general well being. Am considering retiring early now bc how much I enjoyed it but did miss having a title to go out in the world with. If money is not an issue. I say go for it

W.r.t early retirement I realised that other than money - you need a good answer to ‘What do you do’ especially in a society where your identity is tied up to your work. Second thing that you need is association of like minded people which provides you the intellectual stimulation. Third is you need a good set of goals which you need to work towards- which will make you jump up from the bed everyday. But for me - these questions are a few years away and I will deal with them when I come to it.

Unfortunately I still have a few years to hit my comfort level on the nest egg and I’m very afraid :
1. I might never come back - which means lower standard of living from what I and my family have come to expect . Not that we are splurging types - but we have long stopped seeing right side of the menu card. You know what I mean…
2. If I come back - starting from scratch seems a scary thought. Ive worked very long hours to get to where I’m today. I don’t think I can put those hours again.

Many ways to make money esp if you can go the longer haul. My friends and coach tell me that but I hear you, it’s hard believe and adopt. Besides the pay, there is a big of sunk cost in our career that’s hard to let go - the ed, hours, politics, sacrifices. But I think you’ll know when you’ve had enough. Maybe take a long vacation and see how that helps make your decision. You’re family wants to see you happy more than they want more money would be my guess. You won’t stop working. Just stop working on something you no longer enjoy.

As Senior consulting staff it is formally allowed but informally not accepted. This is what I am saying. Very correct.

We get one every 5 years (I think it’s 2 months), but I’ve yet to take mine since it needs to line up with my wife’s schedule. Looking forward to it though.
