I did for awhile - in Account so that might make a difference. But I would frequently have to have calls at 4 or 5 pst time / 7 or 8 pm est. and be in the office for est am start. It did grind me down after awhile
I think a lot of what you will experience depends on your company culture and how you set your boundaries. I have worked with a west coast company based in NYC, and I was expected to work 9-6 + OT. I burnt out very quickly. Now, at a new company, I work 10-6, and the west coast team knows I’m done for the day at 6. The biggest hassle is setting up meetings with the time difference.
Do you have kids?
Yeah I’m declining, can’t trust ad agencies to give a crap about wlb
I can’t speak to fulltime so much, but as a freelancer I love it. I think of it like a bookend workday. I get up early and do a full days worth of stuff by the time they’re showing up to work. Then I basically get the whole afternoon to do as I please while they get around to reviewing. Cap the night with a quick call or two to get feedback and then back to my evening.
That said, I’m more of a night owl who’s learned to get up early, so the bookend thing doesn’t bother me as much as it probably would some folks.
I did it as a full-time intern. It’s cool at first, but definitely wears on you after a bit. It basically takes your entire day and when everyone is working OT at a reasonable hour for them, it ends up super late for you
Are you an early bird or night owl?
Unfortunately early bird
Did a less intense version of this for a year: working in CST for an agency in PST
Mornings were great. Very easy to exercise or get errands done. Finishing work at 8pm every night was a little brutal. Hard to make plans. Worse when it's going to be a late night at work and you have to be like 'I can't do 8pm would 10pm work????'
Rising Star
I have a coworker who does it. He likes it. He said he can wake up a bit later, work out, do some things around the house like cooking, then begin work at noon. And since he's a natural late owl, he doesn't mind working until 8-9pm.
i work FL for an east coast client and a west coast client from the west coast. i start at 8:30 PST and end at 6 PST with a little check in before bed so EST isn’t waiting on me in the AM. it’s not too bad
I wouldn’t want to be EST working for PST. That would be a drag.
Ehhh I’m west coast w ppl on the east coast. I do not envy the east coast creatives. CDs aren’t typically morning ppl in my experience so a lot of stuff can happen 5-7 pm PT.
I prefer it.
