I remember back in the day when I first joined the workforce after the Great Recession. Things were different back then. I used to walk to work uphill, both ways, and in the snow. I didn’t do it because I had to, or to build character; I did it because I was too dumb to move somewhere with mild winters and I used to be really bad at route planning.
I understand that this wave of new associates might seem particularly unmotivated, but try to keep some perspective and recognize that the world is a very different place these days. Every generation has looked down on the generations that follow, despite the fact that the world continues to experience progress. The natural cycle is change, and the older you are the less likely you are to approve of that change. Generally, it is because the older generations begin to see their grasp on power slipping. Learn to embrace the culture shifts as best you can instead of fighting the driving forces of change.
A wise individual recognizes that they can’t stop a river, but they can use their intellect to direct the river towards the most productive path.
Yes, just look at some posts here... “fake it till you make it”, “don’t know why I’m on PIP”, “where’s my bonus and increase”, etc.
You recruited them and gave them offers. This is something that is totally identifiable during the interview process.
New grads don’t know what it’s like to enter the workforce during the Great Recession. Therefore, they have more of an air of self-entitlement about them. Will only get worse until the next recession whips them into shape.
Kids these days. 🤦♂️
I am a veteran and served 10 years before joining Big 4. I think my managers are just as lazy and entitled as the new associates. Don't know how to lead, give feedback, or teach.
Yep started hitting us about 3 years ago really
Why Millennial issue? Millennials are age 22-37 this year. The ones being hired now barely count
I had issues with last years class, but the most recent deployment I’m loving. Eager to work and very smart.
We’ve noticed in our office that people use to be dead set on “staying until Manager”, but now people are commonly leaving as staff and young seniors. Seems like a big generational difference
I know it’s partially because it is a different world we live in today -ie staff wanting more flexibility to work from home etc which I’m okay with. The problem is when they want to work from home, and then don’t work.
I get that some schools might make you think accounting is “easy” but I think there’s a difference between that and just not caring about the quality of work you produce and not making an effort to improve. I’m sorry but if anyone thought work life would be a continuation of college you are unfortunately sadly mistaken 😂 in a perfect world I bed we’d all love to put in limited effort and breeze through life but let’s be real here. Good things in life don’t come easy
Generation Z 🤷♂️
Don’t get me wrong, we have some great associates. But they seem to be out numbered by the ones who don’t seem to want to work 😐
I’ve told HR NOT to hire specific people because of red flags, and those same people are getting offers. Seems like the problem lies somewhere above my decision/input.
Might have something to do with our education system. Some schools hand out easy A’s and dupe students into thinking they don’t have to work hard to be successful in accounting. When these same students get a real job they don’t know how to do anything beyond read a textbook, answer multiple choice questions, and spit out an open ended question that was spoon fed before the exam. Some students prefer this educational method so they can spend more time drinking and playing video games. Others would like more challenging coursework and don’t know how to pursue it. I wouldn’t be so quick to wipe off the problem as entitlement (Maybe this is PWC being unaccountable jerks) but more of an environmental issue that should not be a thing.
Millennial issue... that’s what we call in our office
Apparently America is great again and what makes it great is young people that don’t understand how screwed they are.
Now is the time to work your butt off. A large group of people will be retiring soon. With the changes that have occurred the playing field has be leveled and everyone should be fighting for position. I suppose we should be thanking them for making it easy for us.
