Does anyone have portfolios they can share that are comprised of spec work? Or even a very jr copywriter?

Have a younger cousin that is in college and looking to be a copywriter. She’s interested in starting to build spec work and want to give her some guidance but the books I have are for people more established in their careers, which is great for North Star thinking but also unrealistic in terms of the type of work she can start pulling together

Check out portfolios featured on school websites like Miami Ad School, Denver Ad School, and VCU Brandcenter.

Yeah VCU Brandcenter and BYU programs do a good job of publishing all their student portfolios in one place. I can give her the link to my old site if she wants to compare someone’s current vs starting point.

Please do your cousin a favor and disway her from becoming an advertising creative. It is literally a rapidly dying profession.

Tell her to go into a career that has a future. She can still write / produce her own projects on the side.

Feel legitimately sorry for anybody who isn’t willing to admit to themselves that this industry is all but dead. AI is going to kill it, sorry.

I’d never reco anyone to do this career.

I do think a junior book would be helpful since they're usually badly done. Seeing what a pro does is good, having something to aim for is good.

Spec work can be laid out the same way as client work, in fact it should be if they expect a spec project to work for them like a real one. Learn from the best, not the mediocre.

*don't (the irony)

Brandcenter books are generally the bar, so I’d have her look at those.

Fire up LinkedIn and find juniors at top shops and see what kind of books they have that got them in. And the juniors from your agency, maybe put one of them in touch with her to get the perspective of someone who just did it.

Have her read “Hey Whipple” and “Junior”.

Send her some good print and OOH campaigns. I think a really well written print campaign is the best thing you can have in your book as a student writer. A lot of student books are too heavy on activations or product extension ideas and way too light on storytelling and writing craft.

They usually post roundups of recent grad books on https://www.moderncopywriter.com

Has been updated as much as it used to, but this site literally has hundreds if not thousands of copywriter’s portfolios - https://www.moderncopywriter.com/
