Turned it down, not worth the pay cut. Will hold out for L4/L5
right choice OP
Personally, I won’t. It is a significant pay cut and lose of life quality when you factor in the rent, tax, expenses
TC is too low to live comfortably in the Bay Area.
The Bay Area is ridiculously expensive. It represents a very poor value compared to compensation, where one could have a much higher standard of living in NYC, monetarily and culturally.
Wait until you can double that offer
I am currently making 110K and living in Bay. If you can get a roommate to share rent, or if you can stand with old townhouse/living with the home owner, then you should be fine. 1B1B now costs $2800-3100 on average. I would say everything else might be about the same as NY except rent and gas…
No wait till you get L4/L5 and stay in a mcol city for 1.5-2x the TC
Regardless of Google, I would never move to the Bay, but would to NYC. Especially assuming you’re mid 20s based on YOE
Fwiw even for a paycut, I’d leave MCOL for the experience of a city like NYC. You’re only young once.
I wouldn’t take it! Wait a couple years to gain more experience and increase your exit opportunities! June bonus and raise is 3 months away!
Was there an opportunity to resolve some of these questions before applying?. I empathize with your predicament - accept an offer that might lead to erosion of quality in life vs. being unhappy (or your version on why you looked outside) in your current job.
Out of curiosity, YoE (and specifically in consulting)? And what do you do at D? This is my dream exit so Id love to hear how you did it!
Reached out by recruiter, thanks for the insight
OP when did you begin interviewing and when did you receive the offer? Curious about the timeline. Thanks!
Update got another tech job for 2x what google offered
That’s amazing, congrats! Is it at a FAANG? 2x google is a nice upgrade.
