Have an offer from McKinsey and on the fence about accepting. Product Specialist role (more of a tech role). My concern is mainly going from working 40 hours at D to 60+ at McKinsey. McKinsey folks- what are hours actually like? No 🧢

Don’t be a wuss. Take the role, leave on good terms at Deloitte. If it isn’t for you, boomerang back after 1 year, ideally with a promo. (Hours vary greatly at Mck based on group)

likehelpfulupliftingfunny

There’s certain specialties you can do after residency. If you focus more on cosmetic stuff that’s when you make over 500+ but regular derms make 250-350k

like

Don’t take it. Other people are not on the fence about taking it and would greatly appreciate if you left another spot open.

I was accepted by an Ivy League school and I turned it down for a State school because I was afraid I’d be working too hard.

At a McK solutions group, I work 45-50. Take the offer

like

I'm not sure if it's lower than integrative. Generalist BA's are getting essentially what I am. As for the hours, it's mostly because of the timelines for our work. We work with the same clients on a continuous basis through the year unlike the limited timeframe for typical strategy consulting projects. Also my team is very respectful of each other's personal time and we laid that out very clearly 🤷‍♂️

like

In all honesty, if my partner made $600K, I would pursue something more risky, but fulfilling. Like a start-up, a passion, or something similar. But that’s just me, speaking as a single income person with kids.

likefunny

Partner just started making 600 in March- before that was $70k a year via a residency salary. We have tons of med school loans haha

like

Hours vary immensely between people and projects. I usually do 50ish. Sometimes 70 in a bad week

like

May you please expand on this. Are these 50 ish including travel? Also, if you don’t mind me asking, what time do you get into the office in the morning and what time do you leave?

70-80 hours per week for the last 7 months non stop

like

Nope. Just a cybersecurity consultant that move from boutique to moved to a Big4-size firm.

McKinsey on a resume- stays forever.

OP, what are your actual goals and why do you want to take it? What makes you happy. Base it on that.

Sounds like wlb is more important for you.

I guess whats driving a job switch for you/long term goals?

likehelpful

Which is completely fine. I would question in that case why bother with McKinsey/career growth if you are happy with where you are at.

In all honesty I would probably go to a less stressful job if wlb was my priority.

Go for what makes you happy and fulfilled, not what society tells you is the right path.

For me, my priority is money while maintaining some wlb, so I'll sacrifice other stuff for that. Other folks have other priorities and that's completely fine.

Happiness is the correct answer on what to do here :]

I’m in solution delivery, also as specialist (client facing). Am consistently 60+ a week. Which may not sound bad at first glance, but when you break it down that means 12 hour days. So, log in at 9a and don’t stop working until 9p M-F. If you want to log off on Friday a bit earlier, then your M-Th becomes 9a-10p. Plus the stress of work looming over you theevery night and through the weekend.

How the Firm normalizes 60hrs weeks as average and standard/expectation is mind boggling.

If I were in your shoes where $$ didn’t matter as much, I would jump elsewhere that would allow me to support my partner - the effort seems like it’s be more valuable holistically.

like

Congrats. Assuming you want to maximize happiness and family experience, $ has diminishing return for happiness after certain income level (actual $ varies by individuals)

Here are the questions I have:

1. What is the effective hourly rate at M vs D?
2. Do you have / want kids and need better WLB?
3. What does your partner want / expect from you in terms of $, home time, family duties etc?
4. What career trajectory do you want?
5. Do you like the people at D better or people at M better?
6. Would you learn /do something more exciting at M?
7. How would a ex-M brand help you for a career that you want?

Good luck my friend.

To synthesize all the viewpoints it feels like: Take the offer, get McKinsey experience on the resume, grow for minimum 1 year, and then long-term optimize for what you care about - you’ll know better whether to boomerang back to Deloitte, or just stay after that.

like

What’s the pay upgrade? I also came from big 4. I grew a ton professionally and personally. I think it’s worth it, even if it’s 60+ for the next two years.

like

Why did you even bother applying if you care so much about wlb?

like

I was headhunted

like

I'd stay where WLB is good

like

You’re probably going to be around ~50 hrs on average in solution delivery. Maybe more on busy weeks

This REALLY depends on the solution group. I am also in solution delivery and have been consistently 70-80 a week, with far more weekend work during COVID than before (because there’s been too much client work during the week to actually build the asset )

Take it

Do you know what practice / track you’ll be aligned to? Will depend a lot on that

Solution delivery

70-80 hours per week consistently since joining in the Solutions track

Hello. Just curious on what's the salary ceiling for a manager position at Deloitte? Received a verbal offer and waiting on written offer. Clawback clause in current contract: been in role for over 2 yrs, it was an internal move that required relocation. Relocation was approved shortly after (over 2 yrs ago) but covid meant the actual move and start of my contract with new subsidiary was delayed, I was paid by the previous subsidiary meanwhile. I got small relocation package. Would internal move be subject to a buy-out/clawback clause if I leave now and if yes, is it time in role or time under new contract? Any experience? Thanks!
