Depends on how badly they want you.
It’s common. I got relo paid for as a junior fresh out of school
Wait, OP-you're asking if your new agency will assist you in paying your old agency back for relo expenses that the old agency incurred relocating you?
Why doesn’t anyone understand this? The OP is saying they have to pay their current agency back for the relocation their current agency covered when they started the job if they leave before a certain amount of time has passed, and they want to know if there’s a possibility that their next agency will cover the amount they would have to pay back to their current agency if they go to the new agency before that time is up.
Just moved from US to Canada. They gave me a sign on bonus that did not cover a fraction of the costs ($5k before taxes). They paid for the legal costs. When the delays put a financial burden on me, I was told essentially, "Sorry that sucks, you'll get throught it". Senior associate level I was told they do not normally pay for relocation at my level but I pushed for something, hence the sign-on bonus. So, for Sapient I would say it's probably rare unless you're manager level or above.
🤦🏽♀️ THANK YOU, @Sr. CW1! THANK YOU.
How long ago did you move?
If finances are tight you can ask for a corporate card.
When are you here SR2?
Ive been in Canada three months now! Also, I am now wondering about the above question... I think I misunderstood.
How are you enjoying it SR2? I’m in Toronto too! Also SAD1, that’s how I interpreted it
I love it here! A lot different from Southern US but I am enjoying it.
Be careful, I got my current place to cover it in an additional “bonus” but didn’t stop to think that money will be taxed and not cover the full amount .
I interpreted it the same way SAD 1 did.
not unheard of. everything is negotiable and I’ve heard of people who have negotiated this.
regardless - you definitely need to talk to a CPA because the recent changes to the tax law impact this. basically, moving expenses are no longer tax deductible. (don’t trust fishbowl for tax advice!) - but if your new agency covers it, it might be considered income under the new tax law whereas under the old it wasn’t.
I got half up front and the rest once I got here
Razorfish paid for my relocation expenses in 2012. They gave me a budget of $5k and I didn’t have to pay anything back.
