Yes. I have. Here's what I'd do and have done. I've been successful with it.
Make your argument for why you're an asset and discuss how you've helped the company. Write it all down on paper. Maybe put together a little powerpoint for the discussion if your supervisor is a visual person. Yes. Your supervisor should know your value, but they can be so caught in the day-to-day, that they needed to be reminded of the details.
The one thing I wouldn't do is bring up your financial issues. I've worked for law firms and large companies. I can tell you that your lifestyle is not their problem. Instead, you go in with the "Here's my value. Here's what I'm capable of" mindset. If they don't respond, you start looking for new employment. They'll recognize they should have given you the raise when you come in with two-weeks notice and a better offer.
The results of the last 2 years have been very good, considering this, you could analyze the possibility of a salary increase for all the members of the I.T. team.
I said the cost of living crisis is upon us, inflation statistics are through the roof, money is tight, can I get some extra cheddar? Denied.
“Due to rising costs and inflation, we need to reduce all employee salaries by 10% in order to cover the higher operating cost. We appreciate your understanding and let’s go team!”
Can I have a raise?
It works fantastically when superseded by a list of all the ways that I have made myself more valuable to the company and my team over the last year.
I said “I’m leaving for our competitors who will pay more” and they said “how much do you need to stay?”
Yeah if they had said that I would have dropped my 2 weeks and gone to PwC lol. In retrospect as IBM1 said, I should have left
Ive been on the other end. Here’s my insight. I personally compromise with what they need & what I am able to provide. Most undersell themselves. But more responsibility = more pay & if you’ve done more than what was expected to your initial hiring, then you deserve to get paid more. Same with acquiring skillsets & experience.
Don’t make it personal and keep it transactional. Your skills & talents in exchange of their money. Know your worth, put it on paper & back it up with case studies.
No. They do not value their employees at all.
Maybe not at FASTSIGNS®
I discussed the different responsibilities I had taken on in the last year, and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to take on those responsibilities, and shared my enjoyment at the job and gratitude for the support, and then asked if it would be possible for my salary to be increased to match those responsibilities. They said yes and gave me an extra 1.5K. I wish I had asked for a specific number, i think I could have gotten more.
I like this. Great way to go about it 👍. I have my annual review coming up next month, going to use this! Only difference for me is already have a number in mind.
Never needed to ask for a raise. Let my work do the talking. Personally, asking is too much like begging. Once you start, you can never stop. Out of my 10+ years with my current organization, I did not have a raise only once, 2021 (due to COVID). We are impacted heavily due to being in the Aerospace field. But my raise in 2022 kind of made up for it.
I prefer they/them.
Typically I just ask for a raise once I feel I’ve proved myself or put in more effort than ones around me. “I’d like to discuss a raise”. Simple as that, if they turn you down it seems your already in a position that you feel you’re not compensated enough; rebuild your resume, and once you get offers your considering and it’s nearing the date of the start of the other companies notify your company you’ve considered other options and if they care enough to keep you they’ll either match/offer+.
I first expressed gratitude for the current role and compensation. I assured them I was committed to the continued excellence and success of our company. I asked for an opportunity to assure we were on the same page with performance expectation and execution.
upon this conversation I was able to present facts that clearly showed excelling in the position and ended up asking for a new position or one to be created to continue/better utilize my skill set. I point blank asked for clarity on if my performance was subpar, standard or excelling. Due to the fact that it was excelling I humbly asked to be compensated as such. Show value. Ask for value. Return value.
I said I had a really attractive offer with better compensation but was still hesitant to leave without considering remaining in my current role as an option. I asked them to compete with my offer, and they did.
I started at 14.00 in November of 2020
COVID was calming down and I was ready

be easy to get wrong a year pin is what I got.
I stayed calm and did My Job.

Try 5 months 15.50
Fuck Fuck Fuck
The US Dollar got cut in HALF
I thought a raise across the company
Cost of Living thing would happen,
No Nothing.
Routine salary as per job
Please am looking for a job in. Canada am here in Ghana please assist me
I asked my boss for a raise one time. He said he hasn’t had a raise in 5 years… end of conversation
The better way to request a raise/promotion in my opinion is to show what you've done in the past 6 to 12 months. What deliverables have you unlocked? How many people have you helped to accomplish work? Do you share knowledge with others? Do you know what your peers say about your work and yourself? Do you have emails to support your performance in the company such as manager or client emails that corroborate with your performance?
You can also take market payment grades to support your request, that helps a lot as well. If you show that the market has paid 20% more than you earn, that's a good sign you should have a raise.
Companies need to understand why you think you are worth more than you are already paid before they think of an increase or promotion and it's up to you to showcase your capabilities as a team player.
You can take that to the negotiation table. Do not go empty handed, create a plan to show why you think you deserve a salary raise. Yes, it's time consuming and requires preparation.
If you just threaten them with competitors, none will ever take you seriously. It will sound childish and/or mercenary.
If you are looking for a raise for the same position, be ready to have a conversation with "why you deserve the raise, aka list of accomplishments, remember these days its all about what you did for company x this week, last month, not what you did y years ago" You also want to do some HW on who actually has the final say, who can help you get said raise
Prove it to us and we will decide. Provided proof. Working two jobs for them for one salary. Got a COL bump, not enough to be considered a raise. 3 months later was told they are laying us all off unless we are billable.
This is a very valid question, why are people reacting with a LOL smiley? What's funny here?
