Have you ever come across blatant bias and partiality from the tribunal in a specific county that you practice? How did you handle it? We all see it from time to time, but I’m talking this is blatanttttttt, one specific county judicial circuit, spanning across different courtrooms, judges, state attorneys … If so, how have you handled it? Many local attorneys/colleagues/mentors know and have experienced it, but nothing is being done and it’s really bothering me…

Unless you’re contingent, you’re getting paid to perform quality legal services, not to guarantee results.

You have no power to influence this injustice, nor are you paid to.

Yes, absolutely. It really depends on the circumstances as to what, if anything, can be done. Some attorneys can and do cherry-pick their cases for venue, others leave litigation (avoid it), still others become politically active and angle to become a judge to try to change the system from within. And some litigators just keep at it, doing their best under the circumstances and forewarning their clients of the bias that is likely to be encountered in that circuit.

I work for a small firm (about 20 attorneys) and make 90k. I’m coming up for a raise discussion in a couple of months but don’t know how to go about it/what is reasonable to ask for. I bill about 35 hrs/week at 400/hr, so I think I deserve a bump, especially considering the posture of the market. Any advice/feedback from similarly situated associates or partners at similarly sized firms?

I seriously question my judgement. Need word of wisdom just to get through this hellhole

I’ve been working at a rather prestigious midsized firm in a big city for almost a year and a half now. I have been having a lot of trouble picking up work from senior partners. We are required to bill at least 150 hours per month to meet our requirement. My months are typically only 110-130 hours. It seems like the senior partners already have their “go to” associate for things. Does anyone have any suggestions on how i can increase my workload? I reach out for work pretty much weekly.

It may seem obvious, but in my experience partners value trial experience over anything else, so get it however you can. For example, my firm will favor a former prosecutor who has seen the courtroom a lot but has no civil litigation experience (not even a depo) over a seasoned associate who has only second chaired cases with a partner but hasn’t tried a case. Even trying a case and losing gives you credibility at my firm because you still did it.
