Have you ever noticed how things only get attention when they break, not when they work perfectly? I have seen how QA quietly sits behind the scenes, catching issues before they ever reach users. Most of the time, success in QA means nothing happens, no crashes, no complaints, no noise. If everything works smoothly, does anyone remember the person who made sure it did?

Former QA here and it’s so nice to see someone notices and appreciates the effort.

I appreciate you saying that.

Our QA team is rockstars.

Glad to hear that. Hold onto your rockstars. They're the reason your users never know something went wrong.

We sure do. Anyone who has been in IT long enough knows how thankless a job QA is but also how critical. They absolutely SAVE developers, users and organizations from disaster. Major respect for QA.

"Thankless but critical" that's the QA motto. Thanks for seeing it

I do in my work! Lifelong UX Designer and UX Strategist here - working closely with Developers and QA is essential, I've always worked closely with them and appreciate the craft and contributions, especially when it's things that are critical at large scale, which I have!

like

UX + QA together is such a powerful combo. You get it. The craft matters most when no one notices it working.

This sounds normal. It doesn't make the news when the bridge doesn't collapse or the car doesn't catch fire.

That bridge analogy is perfect. No one claps for what didn't fall apart. But maybe we should start.

I’ve noticed that HR, when explaining why a candidate didn’t get the job, tend to lean on “You’re great, but we had candidates with more experience in [skill relevant to the job].” I do believe this is true in some cases, but it can’t possibly be for all of them.

HR folks — what feedback have you obscured by offering that line instead?

Additional Posts in Job Hunting in Tech

Looking for some advice on how to branch off into a job in tech. I’m a Mechanical engineer interested in working in a big tech company. I have some programming experience but excel mostly in mechanical and product design as well as 3D CAD. Was wondering if any other mechanical engineers have managed to make the shift from a traditional mech job to a tech job and if you could give me advice on the best path that worked for you. Thanks!

They emailed me back saying that I am no longer in this process anymore with no further explanation and in Thanksgiving day. Is that normal?that email really got me very upset

Considering a Product Owner role. Any best practices of what questions to ask during an interview? First phase deals with a virtual Teams interview with the recruiter and her manager on Tuesday. Excited since this is a hop from a Product Analyst role and entails an offer of over $30,000 from what I'm getting now! This would be a permanent full-time compared to my current contractor role that ends in March.
