Inspired by a previous post, how often do you change furniture? (If it's till it lasts, how may years has it lasted before giving up). Curious about bedroom/living room furniture in particular as it tends to be on $$$ side.

My living room furniture is 15 years old and still looks brand new

like

Ooo. Any particular brand of furniture?

I have my grandmother’s bedroom set and kitchen table, my parents last set of living room furniture (20 years?). Classic styles, well made and well cared for, will last for generations

like

Following b/c I have had a nice couch for 8 yrs and it’s showing wear, especially since Covid. Not sure if I should clean it professionally or buy a new one. Bedroom furniture - I only got new when I bought a home w a guest room. Moved my old bdr furniture in there and bought new for me. I assume I will keep it til it goes out of style.

Do you have kids or plan to have kids soon? I have two toddlers so I'm waiting until they're old enough to stop drawing the walls and jumping on the coach to change the furniture.

like

No kids in the horizon yet. But a great advice!

Our bedroom suit is Cherry, was $$$, and I expect to have until I die. Couch? 5-7 years.

I bought a $600 couch off Amazon. At the time I thought that was “pricey.” Worst mistake of my life. 1 year later that shit is worn in like we’ve had it for a decade.

like

Sorry! Did you buy the next set in person after checking the quality or do you think this was one off situation? I love convenience of online shopping, but with certain items like furniture, I hesitate.

We’ve had our couch for about 10 years (was given to us) and all we’ve done is reupholster the cushions. Still as comfy as any!

like

Our Bedroom furniture is 36 years old with new mattresses and box springs replaced about every 8 years.

Couches of good quality about 10 years, cheap sectional in basement 1 year. We replaced the couch as it was getting a little worn as kids were tough on it.

I happen to be sitting in a wooden "recliner" that is over 95 years old though I've reupolstered the cushions 25 years ago.

It has sentimental values plus it's been there for so long. It's like a family member and makes sense to name it! Loved the anecdote! 🙂

My grandpa (in another country) lives in 200+ y.o house that has been passed down in generations. It was in small village so others naturally left for prosperity in city. He has some furniture like that and he refuses to get rid of anything or even renovate some of his house purely for sentimental values.

My sofa is a modernist piece older than my parents. Good quality furniture will last several lifetimes if treated well.

Working on buying a home. Got great rates with a lender. While signing, noticed that I was marked as a Permanent Resident Alien. I'm on H1B.

If I tell my lender that I'm a non-Permanent Resident Alien, would there be any issues vis a vis rates? or actual approval?

Bain & Company Bain & Company Do you have any insights into what they are expecting in the second (last) round? I saw that there are two cases and a presentation. Are they more interested in professionalism than the "analytical" skills assessed in the first round? Do you have any more insights into the presentation?

Many thanks in advance

I’m job hunting in Los Angeles, looking at a variety of titles (HRBP, Sr. HRBP, Manager, Sr. Manager, Director). I have 8 YOE and my SHRM-SCP. I reached my report limit on payscale.com, so I used a variety of other sites to price the roles (BLS, salary.com, Glassdoor, LinkedIn, Robert Half). The problem I’m having is the huge inconsistencies between sources (there are $40k differences between some of the identified medians). (Continued…)

Repost - The % of the African American population killed by police in 2019 is roughly 0.0005%. It was 235 people. But around the same year 6,000 african americans were killed by eachother. How do we reconcile these facts? In 2013, 72% of african americans were born to single parent households; one of the strongest indicators of future poverty and criminal disposition. Can we acknowledge and fix instances of police brutality while also not ignoring our cultural problems as well?
