That’s me, and a bit of an issue in itself. I always want to save it for a worst-case scenario instead of using it when I probably should. Couldn’t imagine burning through PTO and sick days and then needing time off.
Totally! It’s hard not to think, “what if I really need it later?”
At my company we get PTO and that is inclusive of our sick time. So it all comes out of the same bucket. I think that does help people from feeling like they have to use days that they will lose.
Interesting. Personally, I kind of prefer having sick days separate. When it all comes from one pool, I feel guilty using a day to rest because it cuts into my actual vacation time.
My company has unlimited sick time and it is completely separate from PTO (which oddly enough is not unlimited). I prefer it this way because I can take time a day off for mental health here and there without impacting my PTO nor my ability to take sick leave later on in the year. I still reach my deadlines, so nobody has taken issue with this with me.
That sounds like a really healthy balance. Having separate sick time gives you the space to actually rest or take a mental health day without feeling guilty about cutting into vacation. It’s nice when a company trusts employees to manage their time responsibly.
