theres plenty of dedicated and talented people without degrees, also you should pay them just as much.
It is shameful that media agencies expect people to live off under $40k a year in NYC. This is why we were all post meeting food scavengers as assistants.
I’m still a post meeting food scavenger 🤷🏻♂️
Not everyone can afford college, especially these days, so some of us have chosen to pursue other avenues to learn. I do hope you understand that there’s a great deal of privilege that goes along with getting a degree, and frankly I feel lucky that I’m not drowning in debt over what would be, in my case, a bad financial decision.
Gotta keep them VP salaries fat.
I’m a fairly senior strategist without a degree or diploma 🤷🏻♀️
Lmao this reminds me of when I graduated college nearly a decade ago and UM offered me a $29K salary in NYC
Sucks for you, but it's actually good for the recent grads that they don't have to take those low paying jobs.
The struggle to hire is real... I’m constantly fighting with HR to get them to realize we’re not competitive with other agencies
Point being the top 1% are still reaping all the benefits, the divide between the top and bottom continues to grow and as an industry we are not even providing 99% of the staff with inflation increases. Then on top of that, instead of raising the entry level salary to a live-able wage we lower the standards and expect the same level of work. Now before all you non-college grads start flaming me - wouldn’t you like to start out at a live-able wage?? You don’t think this non-college status will impact your career? Yes, there will be some who excel and make it to the top. But if there is an opening and all things are equal between two candidates you don’t think the college grad will win out ?
Yeah, it would have been awesome to have had the privilege of getting a degree- but it’s not in the cards for some of us. It’s 100% worth getting one for those clear-cut, apples-to-apples hiring tie-breaker situations that I’m pretty sure don’t really happen, though.
Sadly, the financial challenges regarding salaries at the entry level of our industry are substantial...and are not likely to get better.
