Head hunter reached out asking about my interest in SM role in Deloitte, and said that it is equivalent to an MD role at other firms. Doesn't sound right... but thought I'll check anyways.

SC -> Manager -> Senior Manager -> Managing Director (non-equity) OR Principal (equity) OR Partner (equity, but only if you are a CPA)

like

Deloitte has MD and principal role which is below partner and above SM

like

SC1 MD and Principle are same level, as is partner. Just that consulting can’t use the term partner - only advisory. We don’t have a level between PPMD

like

As someone who’s worked at both KPMG and Deloitte, let me clarify for everyone. At Deloitte, MD and Partner/Principal are considered equals (there is no promotion from MD to P) except MDs are non-equity. At KPMG, MD is considered a stepping stone to Partner/Principal, therefore it is one level below (MDs prove themselves then get promoted to P).

At KPMG, Directors (not Managing Directors) are the same level as Senior Managers at Deloitte. In fact, KPMG Directors used to be called SMs until they changed it just to confuse everyone.

like

EY is Mgr --> Senior Mgr --> Exec Director (non-equity partner) OR Principal (equity, non-cpa) OR Partner (equity, CPA). EDs don't quite carry the same weight as P/Ps but are def lumped in with them, called "PPEDs". They can sign SOWs, be the QA executive, etc. And they are highly compensated...I've heard consulting EDs are $350-$950 range. EDs are typically more focused on delivery and are an expert in 1-2 functional areas (e.g., offerings, sector). By exception, and in very rare circumstances are EDs promoted to P/P, but it does happen occasionally. In general, PPEDs are viewed as "destinations".

like

MDs do not make equity decisions at Deloitte just FYI only partners and principals.

like

I know KPMG has SM/D --> MD --> Principal.

He led me to believe that Deloitte had SM --> Principal.

like

Yes MD at PwC is same as Deloitte. MD= non equity and same level as Partner (CPA)/ Principal (Non-CPA). Deloitte SM would be equivalent to D (not MD) at PwC

like

This is true

likefunny

Yes, Deloitte has SM —> MD/Partner/Principal

like

His logic was that since Deloitte doesnt have MD, SM is one below Partner.

like

@D4. SM at Deloitte is not same as MD at PwC. PwC has Director levels as well. Directors move to partners.

like

To be clear, MD/Partner/Principal at KPMG is in line with how other big 4 firms do it. MD isn’t the step before Partner

like

^^^ and at both PwC and Deloitte, MDs can move to partners or principals. Senior managers and/or directors at both firms can move to MD/Principal/Partner roles.

like

D3 is right. SM role at Deloitte sounds similar to MD at PwC. We do have MDs but they’re the same level as partner/principal (but not necessarily as well respected, unfortunately)

So you guys have md equivalent to partner? Not following pwc3

Pwc1 or 2, can you describe like how D3 did? Any EY here?

MD at KPMG in advisory is a step before principal. You can't become principal without the MD step.

Thank you KPMG1, PWC1 and EY1. Awesome explanation.

Thanks everyone.

Hey! Any Google folks know if it’s possible to negotiate fully remote if a contract role is hybrid? Personally, I don’t want to relocate and go to the office on a contract role given the current economy. Plus, I’m assuming contractors are the first to go in layoffs. I just think it’s a fair trade off if I’d be allowed to work fully remote. I’m also trying to have flexibility to manage my Airbnb business in a different country. Same time zone as the home office if I’d travel weeks at a time.
